December 2013 Exercise Thread

Postby kiwiinoz » Tue Dec 03, 2013 1:59 am

Hi Ho All

OK, I just want to point out that I gave you all the chance to put up the thread yourselves, but as you haven't I just had to get back on the bandwagon. I guess the fact that it is probably snowing in a lot of the northern states is one good reason why there is not a lot of exercise happening.

Sunday 5.60 km run.
Monday 4.50 km run.
Tuesday AM 3 km run, and I'll head home (from work) in a few minutes and do another 3 km run

Had my first post treatment scan today and don't get the results until next Monday so I have a little bit of nervous energy that I am burning off. I guess it shows huh? Some use alcohol, some use drugs, but me I do my Forest Gump impression and run.

My first exercise outing for December was mostly a failure :( Last night I went to a Les Mill Body Combat class at the Y and only lasted about 30 minutes . I had some really bad GI cramps, was really tired and perhaps did not eat enough prior.

I ran 3 miles (4.8km) outside on Thanksgiving and then again the day after. (Ok - not actually in December.)

I took off Saturday and Sunday and have now done 40 mins on the elliptical trainer each day today (Dec. 3) and yesterday.

My goal this month (by Christmas) is to get to running 5 miles (8km) twice a week plus 3 40-minute elliptical sessions. I also want to do 10 pushups every day starting today.

If I put these things down in writing am I more likely to do them? Hopefully so. I'll check in weekly to let you know how I do.

Kiwi, good luck on your first post-treatment scan! I have a feeling you're going to be putting in a lot of miles between now and next Monday! :D I have another scan coming up in a few weeks and staying active is my coping mechanism too.

I did a quick 10 miler early this morning. It was chilly, windy, and I couldn't feel my hands at all when I was done, and I loved every mile of it! :D I've been doing all trail running since fall, no track or road running. I want to become a stronger, faster, and better runner, so I've been focusing on a few things to make that happen. My training plan includes more days with speed, but balances it out with recovery runs and easy runs. On the easy days/miles, I don't push it. On recovery days, I really don't push it. And on speed days/intervals, I go for it. My mileage is higher, but it's higher with quality miles. Not go-out-and-run-fast-for-no-reason miles which I have done before, especially right after I finished chemo.

Kiwi, I'm envious of your weather!

Julie

I am feeling a little stiff today. My 3 km run turned into a 5 km run at pretty close to my top speed and I kind of imagine the harder I push myself the more I am fighting cancer. Illogical I know but I have to do something with this damn emotion. I get where you are at in regards to wanting quality runs, and not just fast running for the sake of it. I'm not at that stage yet as I'm stilll wanting to push the distance a little, and for the next 3 months the weather is going to be pretty warm. If I run in the morning or evening it will still be a 82 C at like 7 PM.

I'll get some more advice from you on the Fartlek things

BB,

Still waiting for the magic 10,000 miles mark. OK, how's this? What if you put snow blades on your bike to get you through the last few miles? OK, you would probably have to walk it up the big hills to be able to use them so it kind of defeats the purpose but just a thought.

Ray,

I always admire the way that no matter how much CRC kicks your butt you still get it up kick it back. I think that some of the satisfaction of exercise is not so much what you actually can do, but the sheer fact that you get up and actually do something for yourself.

OSM,

I'm just scared of the scan results next week and am trying to channel that into something to take my mind off it. I have done enough exercise and my legs need a rest so tonight I'll cook some Spelt and Amaranth bread, make some hummus, and some beetroot, Fetta and cottage cheese dip, and if I have any time left I'll start on some pickles that I have been meaning to do for a while. I should start another "December weight gain" thread to counter balance what I do in this thread huh?

Have been weight training for the last two months. Trying to get back to my pre-diagnosis routine. May be a challenge now that I have started maintenance chemo of 5FU. This is my first post for December so won't bore you with the prior days workouts.

Today:
Deadlifts 4x9 95K
Bench Press 4x9 80K
T-Bar Rows 5x5 65K
Wide Grip Pull Ups 5x7

Trying to get my body back in shape ....
Tom, 49 now
12/12 Right Hemicolectomy 2X (29 days in hospital)
12/12 Stage IV: multiple distant LN; no organs
20X: FOLFIRI (stopped working)
8X: 5FU
8X: FOLFOX and Avastin
2016: Clinical trial pembrozilumab MSI high

Nice! I was a little freaked out about doing pullups with my port in but it was never an issue.

Yes, I was initially hesitant to do weight training, especially Bench Press with the port. That being said, whether I'm dumb or in denial, I worked out, including bench press, when I had my 5FU pump on. It's the body temperature pump.

I specifically asked what I should avoid with weight training because of my port. They told me just to be smart about what I was doing.

Kiwi, I saw in another thread where you were asking about fitness bands. There are 3 major players: Nike FuelBand, Fitbit Force, and Jawbone Up24. They all do activity tracking but some, like Jawbone, have other features like food tracking, mood tracking, sleep tracking, power nap feature, and idle alerts. The Fitbit Force has a small OLED screen that lets you see how many steps you’ve taken, time, distance traveled, and calories burned. Like the Jawbone, it also tracks your sleep. The Nike FuelBand counts steps, tells the time, displays your progress in real time, and has sleep tracking too. The only odd thing about it is that it measures something called Nike Fuel Points instead of calories. You set a fitness goal of so many Fuel Points and it shows if you are hitting the mark.

Personally, I use the Nike+iPod kit, which isn't a fitness band system at all. It consists of a transmitter embedded in a pair of Nike running shoes which communicates with an iPod Touch or an iPhone. An app tracks your progress in real time, showing how long you've been running, distance traveled, pace (a feature I use a lot!), and calories burned. It shows (and says aloud in your choice of either a male or female voice) your stats at any time during a run and at the end of the workout. If you listen to music while you run, it can be set to play your "power song" for the last bit of your training session. It also has pre-recorded messages by Lance Armstrong, Paula Radcliffe, and others that it plays whenever you achieve a personal best, like fastest mile, longest run yet, etc. I hate to say it since I'm a fan of low tech running, but I love hearing a big congrats from Paula Radcliffe when I've reached a goal! :D

Hi Julie

Horizon sent me a similar link and there is Nike store in the local mall so I'll pop in there and have a look.

I like the concept of it keeping track of food, sleep and other things, and I love it being able to connect to my iPhone.

Now I just need to find some new running music. I have been listening to some 80's & 90's bands I liked but really need to get something with some good rythym in it. I have a Neil Young song about his old hound dog that has a really good rythym and is fun to run to and I need some new music. If anyone has any advice I'd love it.

Let you know when I get it and get hooked up.

Julie

Just looking at the Nike one, and noted your comment about the link (chip?) being imbedded in your, presumably Nike, running shoes. I have some New Balance so if I wanted to go with Nike do I need to then purchase Nike runners?

If so smart business sense from them, but does make it a significant purchase, and I have always preferred New Balance or Brooks.

I was just diagnosed about six week ago. Colon/liver. I began treatments last week and I have a port. I was a serious lifter for the last 7 years. Can i still lift? I am afraid to overdo it with this port in my chest (right side). Would love to get back into the gym and push some weight around. Would love some ideas about possible workout. Thanks in advance.
