Thanks Bev. I'm getting ready for my barium smoothie later tonight, so I'm having my favorite lunch. Trying to relax and hoping for the best. I hope we bat 1000. :D

Of

I've never been offered a Barium smoothie before a PET. Am I missing out on a better scan? Course since I've got an ileo now (I didnt' for previous 2 scans) it doesn't matter, just wondering for the future.

I'll be there on Friday and I wonder why did I schedule it on Friday??? Now I have to wait all weekend until Monday to get the results... okay, so I didn't want to have a late afternoon scan or deal with it on my birthday, so that left Friday, but still what the heck was I thinking???

Hope everyone comes out clean and clear this week! Finger crossed!

Oh, I mean "smoothie" in the most sarcastic way possible. That damned stuff tastes like empty creamy citrus, gah

I thought I was crazy for scheduling mine at 7:00am. Was kind of cool to be the first one there at the radiology center. I actually passed the guy unloading a whole bunch of Stainless Steel boxes covered in radioactive symbols for the day's scans. I patted the inside of my elbow as I walked by him and said "I'll be takin some of those in a few minutes :)." It was nice to get the up front parking space though, cause that place gets BUSY later in the day.

Ski- the barium in front of the smoothie suggested it wasn't going to be overly pleasant. Just wondering why I didn't have to suffer through the drink before. What benefit does it provide?

I'll put my "me too" in here too!

I go in for my PET scan tomorrow to see how things are before starting my FOLFOX rounds next week. No prep though, so I'm wondering why the difference... Just 6 hours nothing but water and meds.

Good luck to all us ;-)

I had a choice of Bananas or Berry for the smoothie. Berries was awful, but I hate Bananas so I can't imagine how much worse the smoothie would be! Once I started having scans at UCSF I was no longer required to drink up, so given the choice, I will take the longer drive to San Francisco, pay the toll and the parking just so I could skip the smoothie!!! :D I asked my onc what the difference was and he said it was really the radiologist's decision on protocol and how they like to read the results. I'm sure there's more to it than that, but it seemed like one was not better than the other.

To all of you getting scans, stay clean. We're right there with you in waiting to hear your results!

The barium contrast goes with a CT scan so when they look at your intestines they see them and not a hollow tube. If gives them definition and with out it you would not see very much. I have the lovely pleasure to have the dye injected via an IV as well. This helps to enhance you organs and blood vessels. The smoothie doesn't taste that bad to me, but then again I didn't have too much trouble with the bowel prep for a colonoscopy. Guess I'm just an oddball that way!

Not having had a PET scan I understand this is a different scan and uses the radioactive glucose to bind to tumors.

2010 has been a sad, disappointing year with a lot of bad news. I hope from here on out things get better.
