Remind me about DNA tests.

Postby JP66 » Sun May 04, 2025 7:08 am

Great news. I had a PET Scan on Aprilt 14th and was NED, but my doctors ordered a new blood test that they said they will use to look for changes in the future. I've been getting CEA checks since the beginning and know about that one, but I didn't ask about what this new test was. The doctor did say it was a DNA cancer blood test. I though I'd read about a second blood test that is commonly done, but I couldn't find anything by searching DNA or blood tests. Does anyone know what I might be remembering?

Obviously I'll talk to my doctor once I get the results and find out then, but was just curious.

Awesome. Thanks. I knew it was here somewhere. Just couldn't seem to find the right search terms, but that was, of course, it. Thanks again!

It looks for tiny bits of cancer DNA floating in your blood so they can catch any changes even earlier than CEA. It’s not as routine as the CEA check yet, but more doctors are starting to use it for follow-up.
55 year at the time of diagnosis, male
Diagnosed with T1,T2 N0 M0 rectal cancer
Total neoadjuvant therapy or TNT (chemoradiation followed by systemic chemotherapy)
Negative since Feb. '17
No surgery
Watch&Wait approach 8)
I don’t come much to the forum , so if this is not updated it means I remain negative!
Wish good luck to all!

Thanks!

Got the results back today. Normally blood work at the hospital shows up in minutes so I was expecting a couple days at most, but doctor today told me a Signatera test normally takes about 3 weeks. Anyways good news - it came back negative :)

I realize the war isn't over, but given my expectations when I was originally diagnosed I couldn't imagine a happier result at this point. LARS isn't fun and the steps to get here weren't fun, but it's WAY better than the alternative. Makes me a little more angry at Memorial Sloan Kettering though as they only offered me palliative chemo. Thank goodness I found a group of doctors willing to try the full monty Total Neoadjuvant Treatment.
