Intramuscular mass

Postby Marf » Thu Dec 05, 2024 2:08 pm

Hello I am new to this support group. My dad 69 year old male was originally diagnosed with colon cancer in June 2022. He had a resection. He then did 6 months of chemo. In April 2024 he had a reoccurrence. He did a folfox regimine from May-September and had a small mass removed in early September. The surgery was extensive due to the location. They removed ~3 feet of colon. It was in the same area as his previous surgery.

10 weeks after surgery he is complaining of pain around the surgical area so the doctor did a CT scan. They are reporting an intramuscular mass in that area. They said it has been there the whole time but they can’t tell what size it is due to it being in the muscle.

They would like to restart the folfox asap because on the chemo the mass was not changing.

I know I don’t have a lot of exact details and I may have misused some terms. I am just trying to see if anyone has any experience with intramuscular masses.

Thank you

Hi Marf,

Intramuscular / Intrabdominal masses are common in peritoneal metastasis. They can happen from seeding during surgery or in your case may be present to start with. Peritoneal mets are easily missed on scans due to their diffuse nature, but is also a bit of a speciality. I would recommend sending your scans to a high volume cancer centre that specialises in Cytoreductive Surgery /HIPEC /Peritonectomy to get a better read of your dad's situation. They should have multidisciplinary teams that sit on the board that can recommend the best treatment path. Chemo is less effective on peritoneal mets but it also depends on the type of cancer e.g mucinous etc, and spread. There is also radiotherapy, and depending on location /size, may be more effective than chemo.
I would definitely get a second opinion, as in my late husbands experience, oncologists are more likely to recommend chemo than not.

Good luck,
CL
