Meditation (PSA and recommendation)

Postby zephyr » Wed Mar 27, 2024 12:41 pm

I'm posting this PSA because I really wish I'd known about this much sooner. I've been through a lot of meditation apps over the past 10+ years, including paid subscriptions of most, and a fair amount of coaching/instruction, including private coaching and a week-long meditation retreat. In my experience, the Healthy Minds app is different and more powerful than anything else I've found. That being said, I know we're not all the same, and different approaches work best for different people.

As a bonus, all Healthy Minds content is free. It's put out by the Healthy Minds Innovation project at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The project was founded by Dr. Richard Davidson, a neuroscientist, who I believe was the first to study the minds of seasoned, long-time meditators (monks) at the suggestion of the Dalai Lama. I've been a fan of his work for years, listening to his lectures when I happen across them, but only recently discovered the app. Here's a quick copy/paste from the website:

We’re a nonprofit founded on the work of world-renowned neuroscientist Dr. Richard Davidson and affiliated with the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Among his many “firsts” in neuroscience, Dr. Davidson and his team showed how simple meditation practice improved the functioning of the human immune system.

If there's anything we cancer patients/survivors can use, it's an immune system boost, but there are so many other benefits.

So if anyone is interested, here's more information:

The app is available on the App Store and Google Play.

If you try it, give it at least a week and it might become addictive for you too.

zephyr,

Thank you so much for sharing this link. I am excited to try it. In the past, I have experienced difficulty with guided meditation but I will try this one. Actually, I have the best luck sitting in complete silence without concentrating on breath, bodily sensations or mantra. It takes some practice to gain control over the steady stream of thoughts (i.e. Did I turn the oven off?....Did I really turn the oven off??? lol). As you know, eventually the mind quiets and it does bring a sense of peace.

Thanks again!

I found meditation way before diagnosis and it was quite helpful.
After diagnosis, it was paramount for me. It induces calm. Also I find Metta Meditation to induce a blissful loving mind state that seems healing.
