Cea after surgery

Postby Markdale » Mon Feb 05, 2024 5:50 am

After surgery how long did it take for your cea to drop?
My last ct looks clear, all Mets were cut out 2 months ago. My cea is at 8, 6 weeks post surgery. The last cea was 12, approx a month before surgery. The 12 is mostly likely higher because of the trial drug I was on bonded to the serum cea and made the cea number look lower than it actually was. At its highest it was 24 and the Mets didn’t shrink.

Thanks for your help

Mine was ~14 pre-op and had dropped to <2 when we tested a couple of months after surgery (maybe 8 weeks?), but that does mean I can’t tell you exactly how fast it got to ‘normal’. Of course surgery itself is a highly inflammatory process so this could also confound CEA results.

Are you tracking CRP as well? I found this quite interesting to follow the reduction in systemic inflammation after surgery too.

Some asian hospitals have used tighter CEA data, e.g. add one: a day before op, a day(s) after op, 6-10 days later, plus the other "regular" CEA data series, to try to address removal thoroughness and recurrance issues.

Likewise, improved use of NSAIDs, nutrients, and IV vitamin C reduces post operative inflammation and CEA "noisiness".
I suppose there are achieved technology and imagined budget issues across the fiefdoms of medicine.

My CEA was weird after second lung surgery.
3weeks I believe after surgery it was 3.x, then a few weeks later 2.1, then in 3 months time it now sits at 8.x
This tells me my body is not abnormally producing CEA because it did get low now high again.
Also tells me it will show up again on scan, just waiting on when!

Crp is part of the panel but I don’t know the number.
