Joint pain whilst on Avastin?

Postby Bianca10 » Wed Jan 24, 2024 5:53 pm

Hi lovely people

Hope everyone is doing alright.

My partner has been experiencing ankle pain intermittently over the past few weeks. I’ve read that Avastin can cause joint pain.
Wondering if anyone has experienced similar and any advice to alleviate the pain?

Is he only on Avastin?

It depends a lot on the mechanism of the pain, but I find naproxen to be more effective than other NSAIDs for joint pain. If there’s a histamine pathway involved here, a daily loratadine (Claratyne) can help too.

Otherwise, alternating cool and warm compresses is good, IR saunas, gentle movement (eg swimming or Pilates).

I have a friend with rheumatoid arthritis and she swears by this product for joint pain. Even better if you mix it with some emu oil apparently (or maybe that’s an Australian thing?!). Takes a few weeks to work apparently, but noticeable benefit.

PS: if it’s just one side and lower limb, keep an eye out for blood clots / DVT. Not super common but higher risk with cancer and chemo, and of course is a medical emergency should occur.

You raise a really good point about the DVT/blood clot. I’m hoping they do further tests for blood clotting when he goes in for bloods as he’s in a trial but I’ve emailed his nurses asking if he should go in for an ultrasound/check.

It is just one ankle and presenting quite strangely. The physio at his work has looked it over and also suggested some exercises and cold packs.

He’s on folfiri + avastin. Will see if we can get him looked at further.

Thanks for your pointers!

Sounds good. I only say it as I had a very similar experience with my shoulder that confused docs and the physio, and didn’t respond to much. A quick D-dimer blood test can help confirm a clot, but a negative can’t exclude it. Doppler ultrasound is gold standard.

Thank you.
I don’t suppose you’ve got any good arguments for keeping on Avastin should it be a clot? Worried if it is that they’ll remove Avastin but after the first scan after 8 weeks the results were positive. I know this can change quite quickly but would like to keep it where we can.

I’m not aware of any hard rule that says you have to stop Avastin with a clot, although its use can certainly increase the risk of a clot forming. If the clot is not large then the usual treatment is just to start daily blood thinners, which stop its growth such that the body can then break it down slowly and safely. If it’s larger then sometimes other things are also needed to reduce the risk of an embolism. Ultimately going to be a risk/benefit decision around chemo and clot management I’d say.

The good news is the body can usually handle these things quite fast - on twice daily clexane my quite significant clot disappeared in less than 6 weeks.

Fingers crossed for a sprained ankle though!
