Kidney stone, uinary retention and urinary catheter at home

Postby DarknessEmbraced » Mon Mar 13, 2023 7:28 am

I've having a really awful time! I was stuck in the ER several hours on Saturday because I could only urinate small amounts and was in a lot of pain. I was given an urinary catheter bag. I was sent home with the catheter and went back Sunday afternoon for my pelvic and abdominal CT. The ER doctor said I was very constipated and have a 3mm kidney stone in my left ureter. He said that constipation can cause urinary retention and so can narrowing in my urethra. I'm being referred to an urologist. The catheter has to remain for who knows how long.
Has anyone else dealt with a kidney stone, a catheter and urinary retention at all the same time? I'm experiencing a lot of pain and I'm so uncomfortable. I've only been able to sleep two hours a night. I have constant burning in my bladder, urethra and kidney pain. My boyfriend is going to pick up my medications today. I really hope they help! The entire time I was in the ER, I only had gastrografin to drink and two cups of water. I was given nothing to eat. I wasn't hooked up to fluids nor given pain medication. Last night before bed I had dry heaves because my stomach was empty. I hope the urologist will be able to help. My boyfriend is going to pick up a bunch of prescribed medication for constipation, pain medication and flomax to help to pass the kidney stone. I've been constipated many times without it causing all of this.

Update: Urine isn’t flowing into my catheter bag. I’m in excruciating pain. I hope that I can get it to start working. I’m going to eat abs take my medications and hope for the best
I’m at the ER. The urologist calls. Ahead. They took out the catheter. I’m drinking ice water and I can’t leave until I can pee. I’m in so much pain. They gave me two string Tylenol.
My appointment at the urologist's clinic at the hospital is on the 23rd.

Update: I saw the Urologist on the 23rd. He gave me more flomax but this time it's extended release. He wants me to do pelvic floor physiotherapy. I will be getting shown how to use an in/out(intermittent) catheter on days where the pain in my bladder is really bad and my bladder feels full. I find that heat can be soothing. My urologist took me off Toradol because I'm having unexplained bruises show up. Bruises without any trauma. They start out brown and turn purple. I only took one dose of Toradol on Thursday and haven't since. I've been using tylenol as well. I'm going to call my family doctor on Monday and mention the bruises. I know that Toradol can cause bruising. I'm also on a daily low dose coated aspirin. I'm concerned about my platelets.

Not quite the clusterf**k you are having, but I had a rough time in 2022 with a never-ending UTI's and
a few kidney stones.

I found that Naproxen 750mg which is a sustained release tablet NSAID really sorted out the pain

Have a chat with the Kidney Foundation of Canada to discuss overhauling your diet and what other measures
you can take to keep your urinary system in optimum condition as a woman with a history of colon cancer.

Thank you. I usually avoid NSAIDS because they will make my high blood pressure worse and could cause an ischemic colitis attack. I have hyperparathyroidism which is the cause of the kidney stone. I had both left parathyroids removed in my 20s. I had multiple kidney stones in both kidneys then and had to have surgery. I've been trying to convince my endocrinologist that I need a third parathyroid surgery. Hyperparathyroidism causes high calcium levels. Thank you for the link.
