Kidney stone, uinary retention and urinary catheter at home

Postby DarknessEmbraced » Mon Mar 13, 2023 7:28 am

I've having a really awful time! I was stuck in the ER several hours on Saturday because I could only urinate small amounts and was in a lot of pain. I was given an urinary catheter bag. I was sent home with the catheter and went back Sunday afternoon for my pelvic and abdominal CT. The ER doctor said I was very constipated and have a 3mm kidney stone in my left ureter. He said that constipation can cause urinary retention and so can narrowing in my urethra. I'm being referred to an urologist. The catheter has to remain for who knows how long.
Has anyone else dealt with a kidney stone, a catheter and urinary retention at all the same time? I'm experiencing a lot of pain and I'm so uncomfortable. I've only been able to sleep two hours a night. I have constant burning in my bladder, urethra and kidney pain. My boyfriend is going to pick up my medications today. I really hope they help! The entire time I was in the ER, I only had gastrografin to drink and two cups of water. I was given nothing to eat. I wasn't hooked up to fluids nor given pain medication. Last night before bed I had dry heaves because my stomach was empty. I hope the urologist will be able to help. My boyfriend is going to pick up a bunch of prescribed medication for constipation, pain medication and flomax to help to pass the kidney stone. I've been constipated many times without it causing all of this.

Update: Urine isn’t flowing into my catheter bag. I’m in excruciating pain. I hope that I can get it to start working. I’m going to eat abs take my medications and hope for the best
I’m at the ER. The urologist calls. Ahead. They took out the catheter. I’m drinking ice water and I can’t leave until I can pee. I’m in so much pain. They gave me two string Tylenol.
My appointment at the urologist's clinic at the hospital is on the 23rd.

Update: I saw the Urologist on the 23rd. He gave me more flomax but this time it's extended release. He wants me to do pelvic floor physiotherapy. I will be getting shown how to use an in/out(intermittent) catheter on days where the pain in my bladder is really bad and my bladder feels full. I find that heat can be soothing. My urologist took me off Toradol because I'm having unexplained bruises show up. Bruises without any trauma. They start out brown and turn purple. I only took one dose of Toradol on Thursday and haven't since. I've been using tylenol as well. I'm going to call my family doctor on Monday and mention the bruises. I know that Toradol can cause bruising. I'm also on a daily low dose coated aspirin. I'm concerned about my platelets.

Not quite the clusterf**k you are having, but I had a rough time in 2022 with a never-ending UTI's and
a few kidney stones.

I found that Naproxen 750mg which is a sustained release tablet NSAID really sorted out the pain

Have a chat with the Kidney Foundation of Canada to discuss overhauling your diet and what other measures
you can take to keep your urinary system in optimum condition as a woman with a history of colon cancer.

Thank you. I usually avoid NSAIDS because they will make my high blood pressure worse and could cause an ischemic colitis attack. I have hyperparathyroidism which is the cause of the kidney stone. I had both left parathyroids removed in my 20s. I had multiple kidney stones in both kidneys then and had to have surgery. I've been trying to convince my endocrinologist that I need a third parathyroid surgery. Hyperparathyroidism causes high calcium levels. Thank you for the link.

Hello;
Had urinary retention. Was put on Flomax which helped for awhile. Then retention again. After going through having a catheter inserted about 4 times during a 2 month period. I finally had TURP surgery done. This was right after my colon resection. So was quite the round. Doing better now after 4 months from TURP. Wish you Luck.
May God Bless. You

I'm sorry you dealt with it so often but I'm glad surgery helped. *hugs* I'm always worried that it will happen again. My colon resection was in 2014. I haven't tried pelvic floor physiotherapy yet. I'm not really holding out much hope for it to be honest. The Flomax extended release definitely helps me to pee more. I wish that the feeling like I constantly have to pee would go away. It's been around since my colon resection. Thank you. :)

I really hate you have dealt with this for so long. It's one of those after affects on the body after surgery?

Thank you beach sunrise. I don't think it's related to surgery. The ER doctor said it's due to constipation but I don't believe that. Flomax seems to help. I hope never to have to use the in/out catheter. The kidney stone is due to hyperparathyroidism and so is the constipation. I'm still trying to convince my endocrinologist that I need a third parathyroid surgery. He's worried that I won't be able to take the high vitamin D doses required after surgery. I'm taking 7,000 iu of vitamin D a week per his request. I would take more after parathyroid surgery. I just want my hyperparathyroidism cured like it was after my second surgery in 2004/2005.

I would be finding 2nd and 3rd opinions from "megadose" experienced endocrinologists and MDs that specialize in high dose vitamin D strategies, to get more experience focused on a variant groups with parathyroid problems. Somewhere in the world (e.g. the Portuguese speaking world including MDs, appears more interested in megavitamin D3 because of Dr Coimbra). Although "our" conventional endocrinologists are slightly ahead of the other MDs, you probably need a dr who can better sort any chemical deficits and imbalances as well as the underlying biological conditions based on deeper experience and personal research on nutrient levels. Common but severe imbalances in magnesium, vitamin K, calcium and other essential nutrients underpin most of the previous toxicities assigned to vitamin D alone in the general population. ie. Vitamin D toxicity was assigned to calcium overdoses for magnesium, active vitamin K and other deficits that are not uncommon in the general population.

Depending on your science b/g, you might slog through the parathyroid references at vitaminDwiki.com

I also might be looking for someone willing to work on my personal solution mechanics and sampling for urinye and my stones if several consults can't resolve something (retention or precipitation stability). In the other stone formers' world, even adequate water is important where minor hacks often fixed them, 50+ yrs ago.

I cannot over emphasize the frequent knowledge deficts, and even fabulous knowledge inversions, in "conventional" MDs about vitamins and specific vitamers beyond RDA or UL. (Not that all is perfect in the alt world either, reading and critical thinking are important) Although the vitamin D MD story has improved somewhat over the last 20 years, I suspect many drs feel queasy if they are asked to sign on the line for recommendations above 4000 - 5000 - 10,000 iu per day, without a measured frank deficiency, or at least substantial insufficiency, vs seeking an enhanced target level.

You deserve stone free pee, strong bones, clear arteries, good immune function, and a body in balance, hopefully through better chemistry.
When I think about it, we consulted well over a dozen outside drs of various flavors, before second surgery.
watchful, active researcher and caregiver for stage IVb/c CC. surgeries 4/10 sigmoid etc & 5/11 para-aortic LN cluster; 8 yrs immuno-Chemo for mCRC; now no chemo
most of 2010 Life Extension recommendations and possibilities + more, some (much) higher, peaking ~2011-12, taper chemo to almost nothing mid 2018, IV C-->2021. Now supplements

Thank you beach sunrise and rp1954. Unfortunately, there's a doctor shortage here. We don't have a vehicle so I can't see another endocrinologist. I'm going to keep telling him that I want surgery. My second surgery in my 20s fixed things at least for a while. There are no parathyroid specialists here. I can't afford to go to the parathyroid center in Florida. I have an urologist as well. The kidney stone is due to hypercalcemia from hyperparathyroidism. www.parathyroid.com has a lot of excellent information. I'm on vitamin B12 due to a deficiency. I will have that level checked sometime this year.
