Any avid runners with a ureteral stent?

Postby deha50 » Tue Mar 07, 2023 7:16 am

Hi,
I was wondering if there are any avid runners who have a ureteral stent? I have been told I would not be able to run with it and that is a non-negotiable for me and I was wondering if others had alternatives. Thanks for any help you can help. Stage 4 person here with a recent 3rd diagnosis, but the stent is due to scar tissue not cancer.

My wife was a very avid distance runner and was training for a Marathon when she was diagnosed. Later on she had to have one of these stents put in as tumor was starting pinch off her Ureter. By that time she had already more or less quit running because the Chemo had resulted in her not having enough stamina any more to be competitive in her age group. However - She continued to ride her horse right up until about a month before she passed away. So I am not sure about the rational for not being able to run as I would assume horseback riding would also be prohibited. She remained pretty active right up until she entered the hospital for the last time due to a blockage in her colon caused by a tumor that was very hard to image by CT scan. I suppose they are afraid that running might dislodge it.

Thank you so much for your reply. The PA told me it was super uncomfortable for very thin people just having them and then she recommended not running because of blood and pain and possible dislodging. I, also, do rugged hiking when the snow is gone. This stent is likely related to scar tissue and not tumor invasion so that is great. But, I am not interested in changing my entire life and what I love doing, until it's the end of the road, so I am having a bit of a meltdown as stents can be lifelong. I am a very lucky stage 4'er who has been doing this since 2013 (Stage 3b) and then it metastasized in 2015 and again in 2022. Fingers crossed there are other alternatives.

Deha50:

Sorry that I don’t have anything substantive to add on this topic, but as a fellow runner and Stage 4 person, I just wanted to express admiration for your obvious triumph over the years and wish you good fortune with this new challenge. I really hope you can find a way through it that preserves your vitality and energy. Not only is it crucial—as you obviously know—to maintain optimal quality of life on this journey, but your physical pursuits are certainly conducive to mental health and likely physical health (including immune function). I hope you can find a way to run through this, or identify a decent alternative.

Hi Deha50, very different situation for us but some parallels - my husband was an avid skier but that’s part of the past now, with his compromised spine and handicapped right leg. Fortunately his main passion is cycling, which he can still do. When he had his ileostomy pouch, he found a nice belt that kept things in place. Like I said very different situation from yours, but would you consider cycling as a way to cross-train? Try to continue running, but if it creates irritation take a break and ride instead? Alternate runs and rides? That said, I’m not sure how much cycling would generate irritation in its own way...
Glad that it’s scar tissue and not a recurrence though!

Thanks for responding. I am 52 years old and have been running since I was 10 so running is really what I love to do. And, I added hiking 7 plus years ago after my first metastasis and that would be out, too. I am hoping it resolves on its own, but I think that is unlikely without some kind of surgical intervention. Some people have all the fun ;)
