GGT and CEA

Hi all, I'm new here and UK based. DX Nov 2021, had high anterior resection followed by 4 cycles of Capox as one out of 40 nodes was found to be positive. For the past few blood tests my GGT levels have been raised and my CEA has been rising slowly but steadily - from 0.9 pre chemo to 1 during, 1.9 afterwards and 3 at last test (end of June, 3 months post chemo finishing). GGT at last test was 54 having gone up to 154 previously.

It's my understanding that the liver processes CEA so liver inflammation could account for rising CEA (hoping so!) but i just wondered if anyone else had slightly higher GGT levels and if they had an effect on your CEA?|

I did try to search to avoid duplicating topics but 'GGT' was unsearchable as too short!

TIA x

Hi Bob,

It may not be quite the same scenario as yours, but I had normal CEA levels on DX and they went up during my 4 Capox cycles (from 0.9 to 2.4 at last cycle)

In parallel my liven enzimes also went up, and one of the several explanations I heard is the one you are venturing, liver cleans up CEA, so liver stress imparis the liver's ability to clean up CEA and therefore increases CEA in serum.

Javi.

Also a trick for this forum

If you want to search for a small or common word, just put it beetween double quoutes, searching for "GGT" renders many results

And btw, welcome to the forum!
