15 year celebration on April 20th!

Postby weisssoccermom » Sun Apr 24, 2022 2:09 pm

April 20th marked 15 years to the day from my surgery which also happened to be my last treatment. My hubby surprised me at work by bringing in two cakes (chocolate with bavarian cream filling and white with raspberry) to share with my fellow teachers. (I work at an elementary school). He had the baker put two blue colorectal cancer ribbons on each cake in blue frosting and had a simple "15 years" written on each cake. As an added, personal touch, he printed out a picture of a bride/groom (not us) with the phrase "You're Still The One' written on the bottom. One of my favorite songs is 'You're Still the One' by Shaina Twain so the phrase meant a lot to me. Even after almost 44 years of marriage, hubby has shown that he still has a romantic, loving and caring side to him. Of course I was a little embarrassed but it meant a lot to me that he remembered and helped me celebrate with all of my coworkers. For those of you who are in the midst of your treatments, NEVER give up hope. As so many have oftentimes said, this is a marathon NOT a sprint.

That is so sweet. Congrats to you!
I'm just a dude who still can't believe he had a resection and went through chemo (currently 13 years NED). Is this real life?

Congratulation Jaynee. What a great surprise. I'm glad you are doing well.
Went in for surgery for a cyst on my bladder, and they found colon cancer growing on the outside of the colon. Got to have two surgeries at the same time! Stage 3, one node involved.

Thanks. I originally posted this a year ago. I'm now 16 years from my surgery and 17 years (6/22) from my date of diagnosis. It's amazing the little things that you forget. This past school year, another staff member was also dxd with rectal cancer. I remember telling him about the oxi side effects, things to do during radiation, etc but totally forgot about the horrible feeling in your jaw with your first bit post oxi! After he told me about it, the memories cane flooding back. It goes to show you that as the years since your treatments keep getting further and further in the background, your life truly does move forward. No I will never totally forget about my diagnosis and battle with cancer and yes, there will be scars that will always remind me.....but life truly does go on.
