I’m sorry you got this news. As far as advice goes, this is a good place to start—there are lots of folks on here with experience, knowledge, and caring attitudes, all of which can help. I wish you luck with the scans—those results will be very important to your husband’s journey. Also, if you want to get the most out of the forum, it’s good to post a signature block with as much in the way of detail
as you can provide (and fit!). Beyond that, I’d say that for now please know that while all this may seem very overwhelming now, with good fortune, good care, tenacity, and strength that you may find you and your husband can put your world back together in the future.

That is usually the standard care for rectal cancer (treatment first and then surgery). Please let your husband know to not be discouraged. Medicine has come a long way.

Do you know the timing of when the treatment start yet? The wait of the unknown can be tough. Don’t spend too much time on google to research. Some of the stories are so extreme that would start playing mind games. And more than likely they are not even applicable to your scenario.

Stay positive.

God bless.
Dx Jan 2015
Colon Resection Feb 2015 stage 3B
Folfox started Mar 2015
Could only finish 11 out of 12 rounds
Mar 2016 dx mets on both lungs - officially stage 4
Apr 2016 double lung resection
By the grace of God, am still clear today.

Dear Shellydo,
My husband was diagnosed at 42 years old with Stage 3 rectal cancer last Fall. Sorry to hear of your news. Initially finding out about his diagnosis was terrifying but so far he has done well through chemo and then chemoradiation. I think his young age has helped. I hope the same for your husband. This cancer diagnosis will change your life forever. I keep thinking back to a year ago and find it hard to believe Cancer wasn't part of it. Don't forget to take care of yourself, there will be burden on you through all this. My husband was distraught with the idea of a permanent stoma initially. Thankfully he's had 6 months of chemo and then nearly 2 months of chemoradiation to wrap his mind around the idea. We are also going to a surgeon at one of the top cancer centers in the US who did present watch and wait as a strategy if he is to have a complete resolution which we'll find out next week. These scans and tests are always nerve wrecking.
I wish you support especially in these early days

Dear Shellydo,
Sorry for the diagnose, here you will find a lot of information and support. I was diagnosed with rectal cancer at age 45 four years ago and I have been through the same type of treatment you described. My life has not changed much, I am still working, running and making plans for the future.
It is tough to get it, but medicine has done a lot of progresses and young age can be an advantage. I found it very helpful to continue training strength all the way to speed up recovery.

All the best
