Lung nodules and other lung "thingies"

Postby Green Tea » Wed May 05, 2021 5:30 am

Listed below are the profiles of a few forum members who have reported seeing "lung nodules" mentioned in their CT scan reports.

In the lines coded "LU" below, the nodules were diagnosed eventually as metastatic cancer (mCRC).

In the lines coded "G" below, the nodules were diagnosed as benign granulomas.

Note: Some of the members below also had liver involvement (LI), or remote lymph node involvement (LY), or peritoneum involvement (PE) in addition to lung involvement.

You can add my husband to the list - he had "a multitude" (onc's words) of small nodules in both lungs. Latest scan says: "Lungs, Pleura and Airways: There are several tiny less than 4 mm diameter nodular opacities in both lungs which are stable. No new or enlarging pulmonary mass or nodule".
Wife of Dx 04/18 (51 yo). MSS, KRAS G12A
No primary (involuted?)
Lytic tumor L4 vertebrae, EBRT 04/18, SBRT 02/19
Resect small intestine 05/18 (no cancer - Crohn's)
Failed adjuvant Xelox
Folfiri + Avastin 03/19 to 01/20
6.7 cm left adrenal mass 03/19, successful resection 02/20
CEA since 03/19: high 58, low 3.2, now 75.5
Scan 03/19: Multiple small lung nodules, now gone/calcified
PET 04/20 uptake by L4
L3-L4-L5 fusion surgery and partial corpectomy 05/20
Scan 06/17/2021: stable

Not sure if my profile is on the list but I did have a 8/9mm nodule in the upper left lobe at diagnosis 5 years ago. Followed and watched on CT. (History is in my signature.)

It grew to 1.1cm last spring and a biopsy showed it to be adenocarcinoma, a primary lung cancer, unrelated to the CC. So in a different category altogether.

My last scans showed NED for CC ... and another 4mm teeny lung nodule is there that will be watched in my 5 year LC followup plan.

Guilty.

8 3-6mm nodules suspected to be metastasis of rectal cancer.

Doing the joe tippens protocol.

New scan in 90 days.
Nov 2019: colonoscopy
Dec 2019: diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer 6+cm tumor
Jan-mar 2020: 20 sessions of radiation, mon-fri capecetibine, mon-fri clinical trial drug m3814
Apr 2020: tumor/scar 3.7cm
July 2020: began 8 treatmentsFOLFOX
August 2020: ct scan reveals scarbed reduced to 2.7cm CEA is 1.5
Nov 2020: Primary tumor had complete response. Possible tumor deposits on latest mri. Biopsy negative for cancer.
May 2021: Multiple lung nodules (3-6mm) on ct scan

I don't believe I'm on the list either but qualify. Here's the lung part of the story so far for those interested:

I had a 6mm spot show up in my lung at the same time as a spot in my liver; I had the liver met resected first and the follow up scan showed the lung nodule shrank to 3mm. Thinking that maybe that was just inflammation after all we monitored it, it stayed that size for the next 2 scans then finally on the 3rd it started growing again. I immediately had a wedge resection after that. It must have slipped out because 2 scans later another spot (in the same area) plus 2 lymph nodes came up. I did FOLFIRI for 6 months and had a good response, then the decision was made to attempt another resection. Unfortunately when the surgeon got in there he found one of the lymph nodes was adhered to the nearby bronchi, so no clear margins possible and the surgery was aborted. They then sent me for radiation, which I just completed (short course, 15 rounds, IMRT I believe).
DX 2017, 37yo father of two
Stage 3b RC (T3N1bM0) normal CEA, KRAS G12V
Radiation + 5FU
LAR w/ temp loop ileo. 2/33 lymph
FOLFOX, 9 rounds
2018 CT mass in liver & lung
MRI confirms liver, Stage 4
Liver resection
2019 lung nodule shrank, monitor
Lung nodule grew again, resection
2020 CT new lung nodule + 2 lymph nodes
FOLFIRI, good response
2021 pause FOLFIRI, attempt lobectomy, aborted
Radiation to lung

FOLFIRI for six months?

I’m not sure I could/would/will do that.

I’m not willing to live four years if it means hospitals and chemo for 3 of them.

I’m not a father, though.

I would if I was.

Prayingforccr, have you had Folfiri before? I can't remember. Maybe side effects wouldn't be that bad, my husband had 18 cycles (9 months) of it (with Avastin), but compared with Xelox it was a breeze (... relatively, of course). Side effects were minors, he was able to work normally, bicycled a lot; he'd go in for the 3 hour infusion, then had a pump for 48 hours which he would disconnect himself so basically it was just 3 hours in the hospital, every 14 days. It got a bit harder with later cycles (he was more tired) but I know people who've been on it for much longer than that.

Yeah 13 two-week cycles. I agree with what Claudine and others have said, that I found FOLFIRI to be more tolerable than FOLFOX, which I did after my primary tumor resection and still got mets. :x My experience sounds pretty similar to Claudine's husband, I worked and did all my other normal activities throughout, with the exception of infusion day when it was at its worst. (I didn't disconnect myself though, that's impressive!) I'd feel a bit run down for the next few days but the remaining 10 or so were pretty alright. I would do more if needs be... of course I certainly don't want to!

One thing I did try part way through--there was a thread about this here somewhere, and I probably wouldn't recommend it for most--was fasting before infusion. My main issues with FOLFIRI were GI related and I found the fasting more or less eliminated those for me. Though I was able to get my appetite back quickly and keep my weight steady, so the docs didn't mind.
