5-fu 200ml push - should I keep it?

Postby CancerBum21 » Sun May 02, 2021 1:44 pm

I'm going into my 3rd round of FOLFOX. Woot half way... My oncologist recommended I drop the 200 mL 5-FU push after my first round because I had pretty bad nausea. I wasn't ready to drop the dosage and we ended-up adding emend. I kind of felt like it was giving up in a way. The emend worked pretty well the first 3 days but day 4 and 5 sucked. Taking 8 mg ondansetron as needed and prochlorperazine 10 mg as needed.

My oncologist does not seem to think the 200ml push of 5-FU does anything besides give side effects. Has anyone else dropped the push? Thoughts? info?

I had to drop it after 7 rounds but it was because of low white blood counts even with nuelasta. Did it make a difference? Who knows but I did have a recurrence 2 months after finishing folfox.
Hopefully you can get the nausea under control. Medical marijuana was a life saver for me and I dropped all the prescription meds and felt much better.

Thanks! You're the second person today to suggest medical marijuana. I'm going to have to check it out. As much as a bad ass I am at dealing with pain, nausea is my kryptonite. Do you know if any of the CBD stuff has the same effect?

I don't think you will get the same effect from CBD alone but all you probably need is a touch of THC. The way one person explained it to me was like this: think of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippin. All by themselves they are each superstars but put them together and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts -- that's the combination of CBD and THC. If you want the benefit of both but don't want the head high, maybe look for an edible in the 5:1 range, that's 5 parts CBD to 1 part THC. That should be just enough THC to do the trick, and I think you'll find the head high roughly similar to a glass of wine.

Another idea for nausea is a ReliefBand. It's like an electronic SeaBand. You can buy one on Amazon and return it within ... I think 30 days ... if it doesn't work for you. You put in on at the very first sign of nausea, that kind of aura feeling like something's starting to go sideways. It gives a small zap to the acupressure point on the inside of your wrist. It's really helped me.

For the record: I don't own stock in Amazon or ReliefBand  ...sure wish I did!

I didn't do the push while I was on FOLFOXIRI. Now that we've dropped the Oxi I am using the push. Nausea seems to vary dramatically from cycle to cycle.

@zephyr Thanks, that makes sense. I'll have to try the ReliefBand too.

We ended up dropping the 5-fu push or Bulus as my doctor refers to it. My liver wasn’t doing so hot so they thought it best to pump the breaks. I guess there is some research showing the bulus dosent impact efficacy of the treatment. I haven’t had time to read it but I guess Emory did a study some years ago.

I’m feeling way way better from a nasuea stand point 3 days post chemo. Combination of Emen, colase, and taking zofran on a schedule has really helped.

My infusion center gave me a sustol shot the first time and emend thereafter as a longer-acting premed--sustol injection gave me a large, nasty bump that persisted--and I was never actually nauseous, although my stomach felt a bit off sometimes on the third day. I was given ondansetron and zofran (IIRC) to have on hand.

From what I've read here some infusion centers seem to take a less aggressive approach to nausea prevention; for example, only adding emend if you are actually sick. Seems like a mistake to me. Nausea tends to breed nausea.

I had the push throughout, although the total dose was lowered eventually because of low blood counts.
