Non cancer issues on scan

Postby polluxx » Tue Jan 26, 2021 10:18 pm

The great news is that there was no evidence of disease when I had my PET scan in December.

Unfortunately it did show “wide mouthed incision hernia with mild rectus diastases and slight bulge of a segment of traverse colon and mesenteric fat into the bulge.” And also “Intrathoratic thyroid goiter displacing trachea to the right, most likely multinodual goiter with mild intrathoratic extensions”.

My oncologist said that the goiter might be harmless, but let’s check thyroid levels just to make sure. I got a voice mail that my thyroid results were abnormal, and I’m meeting with my primary care physician tomorrow to make a plan.

My oncologist didn’t mention the hernia at all.

Has anyone had to have an incisional hernia repaired? I’ve read that the recovery is worse than the recovery from the hemicolectomy.

I’m in recovery mode, losing weight and swimming 6 days a week. I really hope that I don’t need another surgery.

Just checking in to update.

My thyroid was a little hyper, but just a little, so we are going to wait and watch. We are going to add a thyroid check to the labs I’m getting every 3 months.

I’m going to see my surgeon to see if he thinks my hernia is at risk for strangulation or if we can wait and watch that as well.

I got a message this morning that my ctDNA was negative, so I’m breathing a little sigh of relief.

My husband is popping a little champagne to celebrate.

Can’t help with the issues but just want to celebrate the good news aspects .
Hope you enjoyed the champagne!

My mum left her hernias alone . They are not strangulating and although they can fill up with fluid on some of the CT scans they are much smaller than straight after surgery .
They have never been any real concern and she just feels as though she has had enough.
Take care ,

My final surgery was a hernia repair. It was large and was giving me problems. It was the easiest surgery but the longest recovery. Recovery wasnt hard per se but it took a long time to get back to normal activities. But I followed the advice of my surgeon to a T. It’s likely the hernia was caused by doing too much too soon after a previous surgery.

Unless it is giving you problems, you don’t need surgery. It’s up to you really. Mine was large and anytime a loop of bowel got caught in it, it was very painful and there was nothing I could do about it but lay on the floor on my back and hope gravity would settle the bowel back down into place. It got to the point it was happening a couple times a week and I chose to have surgery. Recovery was long but not hard per se. Just frustrating for me to not be able to do certain things but I did not want the mesh to fail and I did not want to have any more surgeries so I followed instructions exactly.

That would be great if I don’t need to have surgery on the hernia. I feel like I’m just getting strong again after Chemo. I am swimming 6 days a week and losing some of the weight I gain from steroids. I would be so disappointed if I needed to stop for surgery and recovery right now. I trust my surgeon though, so I’ll do whatever he thinks I need to do.

I keep my umbilical hernia "as is" in case they need to do another surgery.
I am not sure how many times they can reuse the same belly button for laparoscopic port.

My hernia doesn't hurt so far.

I’m so frustrated with myself. Just when I was catching my stride, I slipped this weekend and twisted my knee. Now I’m back on bed rest. Hopefully all I need is to continue ice, elevation and ibuprofen.

I can’t swim or do any exercises until my doctor has a second look at it after a week of rest.

I know it is such a very small issue here when we are all facing such real tragedies, but I would really appreciate prayers for the healing of my knee. Getting strong after the year I’ve had was making me so happy and so hopeful. I hate the setback.

I so appreciate everyone here.

Hey, congratulations on your clean CT, that is the most important thing!

I also have a bit of post-surgical hernia and diastasis on the recti muscles, as a result my belly looks round and there is a small protrusion on my belly button.

It is unsightly for sure but I dont think it poses a functional problem in my case. Does it impair your life in any way?

I am not sure how to handle it, doctor told me to avoid gaining weight (I lost 12 kg but have already recovered about 10) and be careful when exercising the area... surgery is a possibility but I don´t want to do it right now.

Good luck, BR
