Colon Cancer Is Rising in Younger Adults. Do Sugary Drinks Play a Role?

Colon Cancer Is Rising in Younger Adults. Do Sugary Drinks Play a Role?
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/05/well/eat/colon-cancer-soft-drinks-young-adults.html
As consumption of sugar-laden drinks rose in the 1980s and ’90s, so did colorectal cancer rates among younger adults, a study in nurses found.

Colon and rectal cancers are rising in younger adults, though researchers aren’t sure why. A new study of women and diet suggests that sugar-sweetened drinks may play a role.

Rates of colorectal cancer in people under 50 have increased sharply in recent years. Compared with people born around 1950, those born around 1990 have twice the risk for colon cancer and four times the risk for rectal cancer.

What are biomarkers of the first-line treatment for colon cancer?

Postby O Stoma Mia » Tue Sep 21, 2021 12:58 pm

What are biomarkers of the first-line treatment for colon cancer?
https://medicaltrend.org/2021/09/21/what-are-biomarkers-of-the-first-line-treatment-for-colon-cancer/
With the increasingly prominent role of targeted therapy in the treatment of advanced or mCRC disease, the NCCN expert group has expanded its recommendations on biomarker testing.

At present, for patients with mCRC, it is recommended to determine the tumor gene status of KRAS/NRAS and BRAF mutations, as well as HER2 amplification and MSI/MMR status (if not completed in the past). Although no specific method is recommended, it can be tested on individual genes or as part of an NGS group.

A.I. tool accurately predicts tumour regrowth in cancer patients

Postby Peregrine » Sat Apr 23, 2022 12:17 pm

A.I. tool accurately predicts tumour regrowth in cancer patients (lung cancer)

"Doctors and scientists have developed an artificial intelligence tool that can accurately predict how likely tumours are to grow back in cancer patients after they have undergone treatment.

The breakthrough, described as “exciting” by clinical oncologists, could revolutionise the surveillance of patients. While treatment advances in recent years have boosted survival chances, there remains a risk that the disease might come back."

The truth about supplements and who should be taking them (VIDEO)

https://www.bbc.com/reel/video/p0c5mwdb/the-truth-about-supplements-and-who-should-be-taking-them

"There is a lot of debate about supplements. Some health professionals claim they are essential to make up for the fact that most of us aren’t eating enough fruit and veg. Others say that supplement pills do nothing and you’re wasting your money. So what’s the truth?

Kimberley Wilson, a psychologist with a master's degree in nutrition, looks at the truth behind what multivitamins can do for our bodies and brains and why it really matters who is taking them."

A few recent CRC items from Practice Update

Postby CRguy » Wed Jun 15, 2022 3:54 pm

Excerpted and quoted from https://www.practiceupdate.com/dashboard/

Associations of BMI at Different Ages With Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer

Obesity, particularly in early adulthood, increases the risk of early-onset colorectal cancer, which highlights the need for personalized screening strategies.

FOLFOXIRI Plus Bevacizumab With or Without Atezolizumab for Metastatic Colorectal Cancer

Additional prospective studies can help validate the use of upfront intensive chemotherapy to increase tumour immunogenicity and enhance the antitumour effect of atezolizumab in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.

Postoperative ctDNA Combined With Consensus Molecular Subtypes to Improve Risk Stratification in Stage III Colon Cancers

Incorporating the use of ctDNA and CMS in stage III colon cancer risk stratification adds prognostic value. Future studies are necessary to validate their clinical utility and role in individualizing postoperative chemotherapy.

PD-1 Blockade in Mismatch Repair–Deficient, Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer

This phase II trial of dostarlimab in patients with mismatch repair (MMR)–deficient locally advanced rectal cancer showed that the use of PD-1–directed therapy with dostarlimab in the neoadjuvant setting was associated with a 100% clinical complete response rate.

Food additive or carcinogen? The growing list of chemicals banned by EU but used in US

EFSA scientists screened nearly 12,000 scientific publications. They were particularly interested in recent research on the “genotoxicity” of titanium dioxide nanoparticles – their ability to damage DNA and lead to cell mutations, potentially causing cancer. In animal studies, nanoparticles have been found to affect microorganisms in the gut, which could trigger diseases like intestinal and bowel inflammation and colorectal cancer.

NVIDIA and Medtronic are building an AI-enhanced endoscopy tool

The two will use NVIDIA's IGX hardware and Holoscan medical platform to help detect the polyps that can lead to colorectal cancer. Doctors will get "AI-enhanced" diagnostic images, the companies say.

Just something new on the imaging horizon !
I once had a doctor tell me that he thought by the time my kids needed scoping, much of it may be "virtual" anyway,
BUTT ... having real time enhancing tech will fit the bill better, as there is already a probe in place for biopsy/removal.
