Colovesical fistula (CVF) aka bladder to bowel fistua

Postby Badass » Tue Dec 01, 2020 8:24 pm

Hi,
I am a long-term survivor of metastatic rectal cancer and owe many debts of gratitude to this Board for the emotional support and life-saving medical advice I received here. I was referred to Sloan Kettering when I developed a liver met a year after my original resection and have been NED since 2013. My surgeon there pronounced me “cured” in January, 2019.

So, I didn’t think I would be back asking more questions but it seems I might have developed a fistula between my bowel and bladder. I would really like to know how to find the top surgeons for this repair, should I need it. Has anyone had this surgery? I did a search on the forum and didn’t find much. How does one go about finding the best surgeons? Would this repair need a urological surgeon or a colorectal surgeon?

Thank you,
Jane

Hi CRGuy,
How are you? Yes, I do go back a ways on ColonTalk and very glad to know you are still moderating- very comforting! I try to pop on once in a while but mostly lurk. Hopefully, I don’t have this but being worked up and I like to do my homework before I am in the thick of things and more anxious.

Do you have a diagnoses or a speculation?

The reason I ask, last fall I was 99% sure I had bladder cancer, passing a few drops of blood when power walking. Urine test confirmed blood, sent off to Urologist. Come to find out, bladder is fine, butt they did see something on my left kidney. That turns out to be fine also, at least so far. Non cancer. They are going to check it again next month. If it is growing, as Urologist put it, you & I sit down for a talk. He would want to take it out. We suspect the few occasions I pass blood now is probably coming from my vagina, radiation damage.

I hope it is nothing serious for you. Don't be a stranger.
