Aspirin question

Postby margiej » Sat May 09, 2020 8:32 am

Hi...I was reading this recent study about aspirin and rates of colon cancer. My doctor has me taking 81 mg per day...the usual low-dose aspirin. This study suggests that a higher dose might provide more benefit. I will ask about this at my next appointment, but I was curious what your doctors recommend for you right now. Thank you!
Margie

Dear Margie, It’s been believed for a long time that aspirin is prophylactic for colon cancer. Full regular 325mg aspirin; inexpensive. Get coated ones to help protect the stomach.
(I haven’t read the study you attached.)

Along with this I take psyllium fiber everyday & my colon has been clear ever since the cancer was surgically removed. I use Konsyl- which is like Metamucil without the sugar. I use 1/2-1 teaspoon in water twice a day.

Here is the actual paper which the ASCO text is abstracted from https://www.annalsofoncology.org/article/S0923-7534(20)36073-7/fulltext
and ASCO has added this disclaimer
The content in this post has not been reviewed by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Inc. (ASCO®) and does not necessarily reflect the ideas and opinions of ASCO®.

This work was funded by a grant from Bayer = aspirin !!!
and seems to be more of a comment on an interesting bit of info as opposed to a definitive medical recommendation
as it is " a systematic review and meta-analysis of all observational studies on aspirin and cancers of the digestive tract "

FYI I do take the low dose ( 81mg daily aspirin ) and have done since before my CRC diagnosis , SO ...
I can clearly say that dose did not prevent my CRC. There are still benefits for using ASA and IF it may help some reduce their risk factors
I say GREAT !!!!

Would like to see more / better anaylses of this topic as ASA is cheap medication which could be of great benefit.

JMO

Cheers all

Taking daily aspirin is always a balancing act between benefits and potential bleeds in the brain or elsewhere. IMHO, you and your doctors would need to take a hard look at your whole medical picture and other meds before deciding to take anything more than a baby aspirin daily.

Personally, I do take a daily baby aspirin, but not in the hopes of preventing further colon cancer.

Timely thread!

I have been taking a low dose aspirin for a couple years now as I read similar reports. I have an upcoming June appointment with my Onc at Mayo. It is my understanding that he has published some studies about the use of aspirin to prevent recurrence of CRC. I have met with his NP the last three times, love her, but this is on my list of questions to ask him.

I don't mind taking it but not sure of dosage and the blood thinner part of the equation is bothersome. Any kind of cut seems to bleed for ever!

I will report back what he says.
