Xeloda alone after allergic to Oxliplatin

Postby Suniva » Tue Nov 05, 2019 4:59 pm

Hi,
As I husband get allergic to Oxliplatin, they stopped to give oxliplatin and just to have xeloda alone for a month. Is any one having xeloda alone without oxliplatina and working for colon cancer metastatic to lung?

Thank you

I had an allergic reaction to oxaliplatin (in FOLFOX) on my 8th infusion, so they switched me to irinotecan (FOLFIRI). Did they happen to mention why not go for this option?

Cheers

I’ve done 19 rounds of chemo, FOLFOX the first eight and then without the Oxi for the balance. I think that’s the chemical equivalent to Xeloda without Oxi?

Dr Kemeny was worried about having me on the Oxi too long, and I think she didn’t prescribe Iri because I had been having enough diarrhea issues with the Oxi. At the time I was also on Vectibix, and I think she figured it was working well enough that she didn’t need to introduce another agent to replace the Oxi.

I just had my second liver resection which showed 99% treatment response, so I guess her instincts were right!

Hi Suniva,

My dad is currently taking Folfox which is similar to your regimen, but with addition of avastin. Avastin cuts off blood supply to the tumor. Also, the oncologist might suggest Folfiri, which has irinotecan. Before taking it, get a UGT1A1 gene test. "clinical significance in terms of tumor response or survival was not found according to UGT1A1 genotypes. "

To clear up some possible confusion, FOLFOX is Oxy plus 5FU plus Leucovorin (which helps increase the effectiveness of 5FU, it is not a chemo drug on its own). It does not include Avastin, although some people, like your dad, take Avastin in addition.

As a side note, lots of people reduce or drop Oxy near the end of FOLFOX because of neuropathy.

Xeloda is the pill form of 5FU. *Most* of the effectiveness of FOLFOX comes from 5FU. Oxy definitely boosts it, but if you are allergic that may be a deal-breaker.

I know a few people who have successfully undergone a desensitization process with oxaliplatin after having a reaction to it. You should ask the oncologist about it, if you haven't already discussed it.

Thank you for clearing it up. You are correct. My dad took a lower dose of the chemo, FOLFOX + Avastin. This is because we and the oncologist think a full dose might be too much, due to his age. Moreover, my dad will be doing 3 months of FOLFOX + avastin, then 2 months of 5FU + leucoverin + avastin, then repeat the 3 months of FOLFOX + Avastin.. etc...

Since 5FU + leucoverin didn't work for his adjuvant. We got a private CEA test for him after 1 cycle of FOLFOX + Avastin. His CEA dropped 38 to 35, which is not trending up. So, we are less concern about the regiment not working.

Thanks,
Nate.
