G-Tube placed

My DW was hospitalized Monday, and the CT scans show that portions of her small bowel are "matted with tumor" so they do not believe she will have any significant resolution of her obstruction. Therefore they recommended, and my DW accepted, having a venting G-Tube placed. The procedure was under conscious sedation by interventional radiology, and it was successful. She had the NG tube removed from her nose so that was a relief. However, since the bowel obstruction is now essentially permanent, she can't have any more chemo, and we have been given an estimate of 1-3 months to live. I plan to take leave from work to care for her full time. Sad times. At least her pain and nausea are well controlled now and she is comfortable.

I am really sorry, I hope she is free from pain. 1-3 months is a very short time and there is not much to say that can help. You are both in my toughts.

Make sure you get some hospice help lined up. My wife had at the end a similar blockage, and we tried to bypass it via colostomy, that didn't work but the surgeon was willing to give it a try but she had more than one blockage apparently. These are apparent very hard to see in CT scans especially from tumors pressing on the colon from the peri cavity. Ended up with a gastric tube but since everything essentially going into her stomach was coming out the tube she was not getting any nutrition to speak of. Fortunately she had 4 good years before this with some would say an excellent quality of life nearly right up to the end. no less than 4 weeks earlier she was riding her horse, judging field trials and socializing with other dog field trialers, though I could see she was loosing a tremendous amount of weight. Many were taken by surprised when she passed away. Once they released her from the hospital to home hospice care (mostly me primarily giving her drugs and ice chips to keep her comfortable) she lasted about 2 weeks. Passed away Jun 4th 2017. This is going to be mentally and emotionally exhausting to you and sometimes family can't help but say and do the wrong things during this time that might set you off. Also make sure that her friends and colleges get a chance to see her as it will help them some when she does pass. At least they will have been able to say their goodbye's as well. The pain will last a while. I have not been very focused for more than a month now, and it been a little over a year. Her birthday would have been last Friday. Fortunately her sister and her husband spent it with me. I was probably better prepared than most as I was an Anticancer drug researcher. As mush as I tried not to show it, I knew what the eventual outcome of her diagnosis would be. She was quite physically fit to begin with as a life long runner. At the time of diagnosis she was training for a marathon.

Regards, and best wishes,

GrouseMan
