Note that some liver values also rise during chemo. For example, midway through 15 cycles of folfiri + avastin my ALP was high. It went back down when I went on a break.

Agree. Mets are not the only reason these values can rise. Mine went way up during chemo too. And sometimes people have liver/bone mets and no rise at all. So it's definitely something to keep an eye on but not to freak out about.

Oh, Lpas, this is such a great pile of important info!!!! Thank you so very much !!!! I know, lots of people will benefit from your post on the immune testing. I have been always wondering what tests do they do to check the immune function - and here you go - you had the answer! And many thanks for the reference to a good ND - very hard to find one who works in a similar fashion like yours...

In Ecuador they probably do not have all these testing available, though. But it looks like I am going to be stuck in NY for much longer than I would love to, or expected... So, might either go to Boston to see your doc, or make at least a phone contact and do testing....

Many thanks again, sweetheart. Hugs, Vilca

Ipas,

Thank you for your blood work suggestions. While searching for my tax papers I came across all my "missing" cancer research papers. I finally put them all in a notebook and hope to get them in some sort of order. I did read about ferritin which if I remember is for your iron. I have worked for the past two years at keeping my iron and copper level down...but my doctor(s) never test them so I have no ideal if they are at a good level.

I will put your suggestions in my notebook and work on my doctor(s) on getting these test done.

lpas wrote:Very interesting, vilca--thanks so much for posting. The naturopath I'm currently working with is very focused on immunology and strengthening faulty components of the immune system to ensure a healthy response. For example, I learned that my IL-2, IL-12 and IFN-gamma were all low. The doctor prescribed a tailored supplement regime (e.g. astragalus, cordyceps, fucoidan, etc.) to try and raise those values back to where they should be. We periodically test my immune function to see
how the supplements are working and to make adjustments as necessary. He claims to have never seen a recurrence in an early stage cancer patient with a properly functioning immune system. I've been pretty impressed with his approach.

Hi LPAS, I realize this is an old post.

How do you test immune function?

How do you test immune function?

The Immunoscore is geared toward certain patients, cancer markers, and (expensive) treatments, like PDL1.

What lpas referred to is nutritional immune support, with tests geared toward nutrition for identified, specific inflammation pathways that overexpress cytokines, and nutritional imbalances.

Berlanger checks inflammation and various cell and cytokine panels, most of which are thru LabCorp, some are more specialized labs and require time sensitive shipping. Berlanger is the most biochemical test based, individualized nutriceutical consultant I've seen here so far.

most of 2010 Life Extension recommendations and possibilities + more, some (much) higher, peaking ~2011-12, taper chemo to almost nothing mid 2018, IV C-->2021. Now supplements
