Richard

I'm more of an aerobic sort of guy but Horizon and Tom (Tchan888) are both lifters with ports and are fine with lifting with the port in. Julie does a fair bit of lifting from what I can gather and she has a port and a pump in her liver, and in my own small way I do some small weights, and a lot of lifts of my own body weight with a port and I have never had a problem.

Good luck with the treatment

Kiwi,
You asked about music, I know this is like "preaching to the choir" being that your an aussie...but I've always found myself going back to my well worn AC/DC Back in Black CD when I exercise. My son also loves to listen to it prior to his high school sports to get pumped up.

The soundtrack to "Vision Quest" is pretty cool too....especially Lunatic Fringe.

I found the port didn't really hinder me when I had it. Pullups, benching, pec deck, etc. I all did without any issues. I tended to not do any exercises where my hands were behind my head. That just freaked me out too much. It didn't hurt, I just didn't like the thought of the port being stretched like that.
I'm just a dude who still can't believe he had a resection and went through chemo (currently 13 years NED). Is this real life?

All the energy I spent on running prior to the results of the last scan meant that I have run too much and hurt my foot, thus I am not running at the moment
I am in the gym doing the elliptical and the bicycle which have to be the most boring things to do, although I am sure a lot of people say that about the treadmill
I'll rest my foot for a week, then relax over Christmas and see what I can do in the new year.
Dr Google did not seem to give me any definitive answers.

Hi Guys

Hurt my foot by running too much and have been doing my best Brown Bagger impersonation and been using the exercise cycle.

Here is a photo of what I have been eating in my spare time.....hence my need to exercise....I only ate 2 pieces but the sugar rush nearly did me in

Hi everyone! I love this thread.

Question- do/did you guys work out when connected to the chemo pump? I wanted to at least do some treadmill time as I think the walking helps fend off fatigue, but since my 5-FU pump activates by body temp, I wasn't sure if exercise was okay. I'm going to ask my onc today, but was wondering about the experiences of people here.

Thanks!

Well my exercise efforts have fallen way off after some hospital stays this past fall..as well as just trying to catch up on things. Though this weekend I turned the corner. Yesterday went for a 5ish mile hike. I did do battle with a tree branch that tried to poke my eye out and i fell backwards in the avoidance maneuvers, sore from that. Then tonight did an hour long yoga class. Between the hike and yoga my legs are burning!

Hi DBF. I went on fast walks when connected to 5FU pump and it certainly helped my mood, if nothing else. Obviously ask the onc though.

Know this is January, but thought I would give an update on my last workout from December 2013. A little context. Last December 31, I spent the night in the hospital due to complications from my right hemicolectomy. I spent the next 22 days in the hospital. It was brutal. So, am happy that, despite being put back on maintenance chemotherapy, my weightlifting is back to my last workout prior to the initial surgery that took place on December 21.

Bench Press: 95 Kilos 10x3
Squats: 85 Kilos 10x3 (Know I can do heavier.)
Deadlifts: 120 Kilos 10x3
Shrugs: 175 Kilos 10x3 (With straps.)

I do other exercises, but this will give you a flavor. I do have a port and this has limited some of my lifting. I can't do Cleans and I can't do the Log Lift like the Strongman competition. Know this may seem kind of self-indulgent, but want to share this with my fellow CC Warriors. I am actually purchasing more equipment this year as a reward to myself.

On a different note, I wanted to take a picture of my physique today as a measure for next December 31. But, I am kind of scared. I don't know if I will be able to work out like I am now ....

Thanks for letting me toot my workout horn.

Also, I do workout when I am connected to my 5FU pump (on the day in between connection and disconnection, i.e., Day 2). I don't do bench press while I have the pump though. On the days that I to the infusion center to receive pump and am disconnected, I don't workout. It is challenging enough for me mentally to go to the infusion center.

Blessings,

Tom

I didn't work out with the pump on. During the 14-day FOLFOX schedule I would work out during the second week. The first week after infusion I was just too tired. I generally kept it to elliptical (about 30-40 mins with 120-140 strides per minute) 3 days a week. At first I was a little reluctant to show my ileostomy bag in the locker room, but I got over it.

As for my December 2013 goals: I didn't get to 2 5-mile runs a week. I did run 5 miles once - the day after Christmas. I've been running 3-4 miles 3 times a week otherwise, so I'm getting there. It's rough trying to run that far on a treadmill for me - I just keep staring at the numbers. Outside is much easier. I did run 4 miles on a treadmill on Tuesday, though. Music is essential. Also no pushups yet - don't know why I find it hard to find time to do that.

I think I want to run a half marathon this year. Anybody know a good one in New England?

just finding this thread...great stuff to all those who have been able to keep up your workouts through out treatment...i think it helped me get through my treatments..i rode my bike everyday to chemo/radiation treatment and then on to work from there...i ride through the Eastern Canadian winters snow wind and rain...just a bit touched in the head i think sometimes but you gotta do what you can...i have also just started back to the gym full time 3 months ago...it has been years since i was a member anywhere...i have to say i feel much better for it even with all the riding i was doing the additional time with the weights and cardio are really helping with keeping my system regulated.
