Re: Post Surgery Issues

I had rectal cancer and surgery so quite a bit of a difference in anatomy but your problems have some similarities. You still have a rectum (my presumption), so, when things are back to normal, it should act as a cache to grab waste, extract water from it so that you have normal stools. I had an ile...

Re: Applying for New Jobs Advice

Chemo hits people differently. I've read about people that wind up sleeping most of the day to those that run half-marathons. If you're young and fit, then you may do quite well. I worked normally while on chemo except that i worked in the office early in the morning and then worked from home the re...

Re: Update Well its time for a CT Scan

I had an unexplainable rise in CEA through chemo such that my Oncologist ordered a CT scan and found nothing. I believe the rise was exercise-related. I charted the rise in CEA against the number of steps I took and it correlated nicely.

Scans with contrast should find any area with unusual activity.

"I’m glad you are doing well! I am starting my chemo today. In fact, I took 3 xeloda pills at 8AM, going to MSK at noon for my oxali. infusion, and then taking another 3 xeloda tonight for the next 14 days, one week off, start again, for 3 months." You will likely have had your first infus...

Re: Rectal cancer (Stage 3A) diagnosed late June 2017

I returned to the gym about three weeks ago and started doing a lot of abdominal work and it's resulted in a considerable improvement with regard to clustering. I was away from the gym for about a year and there were two particular exercises I did that contributed to abdominal muscle strength: weigh...

Re: Covid 19 vaccine

Glad to hear that SOMEONE is getting vaccinated! They're still working on people 70+ only here in Maine. In NH, those over 65 are getting vaccinations. Our vaccine supply has tripled this week though. I'm in the 50-65 category and we can start making resrvations March 22 for vaccinations starting M...

Re: Stage IIA: Chemo or not?

NHMike, I see you had a reversal (colostomy?) 1 year after, and it has now been about 2+ years since then. How did it go? I understand that the first few months are challenging, but do you have any issues now? In reading other support groups specifically in the ostomy boards, it makes it seem that ...

Re: Stage IIA: Chemo or not?

I mispoke. My treatment is oxaplatin infusion every 3 weeks, with 1 xelora pill in the AM and 1 in the PM for 14 days in between. This will go for 6 months. The perforation in the bowel was caused by, according to the surgeon’s notes “complete large bowel obstruction”. The procedures performed were...

Re: Stage IIA: Chemo or not?

I was planning on using local medical resources for chemo and radiation but many coworkers and friends (on this board too) recommended getting a second opinion. So I worked on getting second opinions scheduled in Boston, about an hour away for me. It was quite difficult even getting to talk to someo...

Re: Stage IIA: Chemo or not?

On the colostomy - I had a lot of problems initially and was supposed to meet with a WOC (wound, ostomy, continence) nurse about two weeks after discharge but the appointment got rescheduled for a month later. I had leaking and burning at the ileostomy site. The WOC nurse gave me a different pouchin...

Great news, Mike!! I know I haven't been very active around here but I do still come back to check on peeps. :) I'm relieved to see that you've got a process that's working for you. I got Visbiome through the mail when I was trying to get rid of my third c diff flareup; it's another probiotic that ...

Re: Rectal cancer (Stage 3A) diagnosed late June 2017

Doctor said no more scans. Colonoscopies every three years. So just bloodwork. It will be five years from diagnosis in 2022. We actually didn't talk much about my health in the visit after it was clear that things are going fairly well.
