blood clot

Hi Carolyn, Boy is that a touchy subject with me. Little did I know that 1) cancer by itself increases your chance of a blood clot (don't know why just that I was told that) 2. chemo increases the chance even more and 3. the combinatino of birth control pills, chemo and cancer is a BIG NO NO!! I end...

Stopping Chemo? Good or Bad Idea?

I wanted to give you some more information to read. Maybe it will help your husband make a decision. Hope I do this correctly. http://professional.cancerconsultants.com/news.aspx?id=29293 http://professional.cancerconsultants.com/oncology_rectal_cancer_news.aspx?id=36850 http://www.asco.org/portal/s...

Any Stage IIAs NOT going throught chemotherapy?

Wanted to forward to you some articles about Xeloda. I am not computer literate and this seemed too easy, so I hope these links come across correctly. http://professional.cancerconsultants.com/news.aspx?id=29293 http://professional.cancerconsultants.com/oncology_rectal_cancer_news.aspx?id=36850 http...

Any Stage IIAs NOT going throught chemotherapy?

In answer to your question, no using Xeloda alone is not at all uncommon. Also, I just read an article where it was stated that single drug chemo was equally effective in early stage cancers and combination chemo. If the onc refuses to use Xeloda, I would question why. I am not sure I buy this, but ...

Book suggestions

Sorry about that. I also wanted to state that this book is NOT about miraculous healings and is not in any way unrealistic. Yes, it does talk about God in our lives but mainly it deals with how we need to use ALL the resources we have (God, doctors, medicine, attitude, etc) to help us get through th...

Book suggestions

I found this book particulary helpful. It was written by a fairly young woman (if I remember correctly late 30's but may have been early 40's) who was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer. It details her story, her frustrations, fear and all the other emotions.she went through and how she survived....

Raised CEA level but no diagnosis yet

Lizzie, Everyone is right. DEMAND a colonoscopy. There is absolutely NO way of knowing what you do or don't have without it. Personally I think sigmoidoscopies should be done away with. I am sick and tired of hearing that they are fine since most (have no idea where they get that from) polyps are in...

Stopping Chemo? Good or Bad Idea?

I had Stage 1B/IIA (differing opinions) rectal cancer which is different in some ways because of treatment plans (rectal cancers most of the time have neoadjuvant chemoradiation-don't think that is the case for colon cancer) However, I asked my onc about chemo after surgery and because I chose a sli...

How long until you heard your pathology report?

When I had my colonoscopy, my pathology report was back in two days. After my surgery, it took a full week and I ended up calling the surgeon's office about 1/2 hour before they were going to call me. Since it has been a week, I would call them tomorrow (Monday). T3 means the depth that the tumor ha...

What is the definition of the peritoneal reflection?

Hello, Wel this question stumped me and after finding many references to it, none of which explained what it was, I decided to call my son's girlfriend's mother (hope that makes sense) who is a nephrologist (kidney specialist-MD) Anyway, here is what she told me: The peritoneal reflection is an anat...

Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about. Right after diagnosis, I read a story about a very young man who was diagnosed with cancer and it made him realize what truly was important in his life. He looked back on the days before diagnosis and realized that all he really did after work was come...

fungal infection? anal fissure? rectal ulcerations? next??

Ruth, Are you using a Rx hydrocortisone cream or just an over the counter one? The reason I ask is that I was told in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS to stay away from too much hydrocortisone cream on radiated tissue. It dries it out even more and continued use tends to thin out the skin. That's the last thing y...

Port removal

When I switched to oral chemo, I begged to have my port removed. Onc didn't want to right away, but I said yes. Now I was a WUSS when it came to putting it in so was a little nervous about taking it out. Had it done in the hospital radiology dept. A piece of cake! The little shot of novacaine was th...

My Mom has just been diagnosed with colon cancer stage 4

Maggie, I do not have Stage IV so a lot of what you wrote about I cannot answer. However, you asked if it is normal to wait for surgery. That one I can speak to. While I was diagnosed with stae IB/IIA (some doubt about it) rectal cancer, I did the chemoradiation first (to shrink the tumor), then I d...

Any Stage IIAs NOT going throught chemotherapy?

First a question. were you diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer? The reason I ask is that the treatments are different. If you were a stage IIA rectal cancer patient, then you would have most likely done neoadjuvant chemoradiation and that would add another dimension to the dilemma. I am sure that ...
