Red cell distribution width

I recently noticed that my husband's red cell distribution width (RDW) has been elevated since May 15th (HAI pump crisis time). Curious as to what that might mean, I found very scary data about it. This factoid stands out in particular: "RDW was strongly associated with deaths from cancer."...

Re: Stage IV (with liver cyst) - 6 yrs NED

I consider cysts to be much like lymph nodes in regard to growth and shrinkage. My husband has a 2.3 cm x 1.6 cm periportal node that has me anxious. The radiologist called it "stable" but I don't like the fact that it's now 2.3 cm x 1.6 cm when it was 2.0 x 1.1 cm in December 2018. That b...

Image of lymph node v of liver met on MRI

Here is a question that I know will take me an inordinate amount of time to find an answer to online, so I thought I would throw it out here to the group to see if anyone may have answers: Does an MRI image of a cancerous lymph node, e.g. periportal or portocaval (aka portacaval), have the same char...

Re: Stage IV (with liver cyst) - 6 yrs NED

Has it ever been biopsied? My husband has (and had) a number of cysts (actually benign tumors called hamartomas) on his liver. We know they aren't cancerous because all have been biopsied. If yours hasn't been biopsied, the one characteristic that distinguished his benign masses from the cancerous o...

Re: 5FU as second line?

Looking at that article you shared, julie, and see that "Significant resistance to 5-FU resulted from p53-loss or from gain-of-function (GOF) mutation (R248W)." My husband's mutation is [at least in the "first primary colon tumor"] "TP53 c.745A>G (p.R249G), exon 7 - in 34% o...

Re: 5FU as second line?

Who would have thought that it could get even more complicated??? [/sarcasm]

Thanks for sharing. I look forward to spending the weekend reading about this and 5FU monotherapy. [/not sarcasm]

My husband's tp53 mutation was at exon 7. I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

Re: 5FU as second line?

Julie, Do you happen to know if your CC was tp53 mutated? I read, again as I have seen this expressed a number of times in various journal articles over the past couple years, that "CRC with mutated TP53 is resistant to 5-FU" in this extremely interesting article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.g...

Re: HELP. Mother’s treatment wrong?

I LOVE all your questions. They tell me that you are paying close attention and caring about your mom. Here are my responses: - she’s being treated exclusively by general surgeon. She had informal mtg w oncologist when she was in the emergency room after the colonoscopy. As it was an emergency surge...

Re: 5FU as second line?

No, I hadn't seen that. Thanks, LPL! I am familiar with the sad statistics cited in that website: even with the addition of leucovorin, only about 20 percent of mCRC patients respond to treatment, compared to approximately 10 percent response to 5-FU alone (J Clin Oncol 1989;7:1419-1426)... oxalipla...

Re: 5FU as second line?

I guess I was using the term "second-line" without a full understanding of what it means. It may be easier to put my question another way: Has anyone done, or heard of doing, only 5FU (monotherapy) instead of Folifiri/etc after surgery for a liver met recurrence? My signature below may pro...

5FU as second line?

Has anyone done, or heard of, only 5FU as a second-line treatment?

I would be very interested in learning the rationale behind such a decision. Thanks in advance!
