Re: Slowing down ileostomy

I never tried Metamucil but peanut butter, mashed potatoes, and white rice worked for me.

Re: Advice for managing diarrhea with ostomy

I was only on FOLFOX - not Avastin - but I went through chemo with my temporary ileostomy as well. For me, diarrhea really wasn't much of a problem. If my output seemed to be getting more liquid, over the counter Imodium 2 or 3 times a day seemed to work fine. I did have one big leak at the clinic, ...

Re: Repeat Colonoscopy, how often?

My oncologist recommended a colonoscopy annually. I'm having my first one post-surgery next month.

Re: question for all survivors

Probably the nicest, most useful, and least unexpected thing was a care package from The Pampered Patient that a former co-worker sent me. She and I had only kept in touch off and on over the last few years and this very timely gift arrived right in the middle of chemo. Then there were so many other...

Re: Does anything help with the coughing?

I, too, have been having awful coughing fits since December and no one has been able to figure them out. At times I have coughed so violently I have either passed out briefly or thrown up all over myself. In January I even spent a week in the hospital having all kinds of tests but unfortunately not ...

Re: SO LONG STOMA and how to avoid the NG tube

Shannon, SO glad to hear that things are going well for you. I'm 8 months post-reversal and overall things are pretty good for me as well. I've been eating whatever I want and haven't really had any problems. Once in a while, there's an occasional bad bathroom day, but that's not very often. The onl...

Re: Getting the port removed

I, too, had my port removed at the same time they did my ileostomy reversal. That took place about 3 months after I'd finished chemo.

Re: Two questions - cannabis oil & aspirin

Cannot speak to the cannabis oil - never tried it. As for the aspirin... At my last appointment, my oncologist recommended that I start taking one aspirin daily. I'd never heard this before, but according to him, studies have shown that it can reduce the chances of a reoccurrence. Not sure what, if ...

Re: Increasing Numbness in Feet, Treatments??

Just thought I'd mention that my neuropathy really got much worse 3 months AFTER I had finished FOLFOX. During chemo, the numbness and tingling was rather off and on, but now it completely there, all the time. Also accompanied by a bit of joint pain, especially in my knees. I'm on my feet at work al...

Re: not a fan of the "new normal"

Although I have so much to be thankful for, I'm really not thrilled how much of my "new normal" is centered around the bathroom. What used to be a normal bodily function has gone from no big deal to almost an obsession. It's always rather stressful having to worry about how often will I ha...

Re: Please Help. Reversal back 2 bag 4 2nd time complication

Really sorry you have to go through all this and hope it improves real soon!

Just a thought - have you been seen by an ostomy nurse? If not, maybe he/she could help with the leaking bags as well as the pain.

Re: Ileostomy Reversal-Is there anything I can do to prepare

My surgeon definitely warned me about any heavy lifting. He also mentioned that I shouldn't do any exercises that involve abs until a year after surgery.

Re: I am new here : rectal cancer stage 3

I also did 6 weeks of radiation and chemo before my surgery. That part wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined and I continued to work through that. The worst thing was just lots of fatigue. The radiation can make your skin appear as if it had a mild sunburn, so I used Eucerin lotion for that. The Xe...

Re: natural remedies

I drank a lot of ginger tea - especially the Lemon Ginger flavor made by Stash Tea. I also found these ginger hard candies at an Asian grocery store and they helped a lot as well. I also used these Queasy Pops lollipops which also come in a ginger flavor. I think they were originally made for pregna...

Re: Magnesium loss

I always got infusions of both magnesium and calcium before each chemo session. The nurse told me that is supposed to help lessen the side effects.
