Need big time help to manage extreme small bowel syndrome

My dad got operated for SAIO (his 4th surgery) last month. Since then he got ileostomy which is just 2 feet from his stomach. His recovery has been quite poor till now. Any liquid he drinks won't take more than 5 minutes to get out through the bag and the stool itself is super watery for most of the...

Done with 4th surgery and temporary colostomy now

It is 24 hours post surgery now, the surgeon told us the blockage was due to the terrible adhesion of larger bowel loops. Upon freeing them, some punctures happened to the intestine so they had to add a colostomy bag. He also told us this will cause small bowel syndrome and we will have to take more...

Re: Time to get 4th surgery to remove intestinal obstruction

Previous scan was done in June, now on looking the previous reports. It does say there is a non enhancing spot (simple cyst) but over this interval it has grew out. It is in right lobe (segment VI). The surgeon only told to operate on pelvic mass. Should we discuss with him to operate on that liver ...

Time to get 4th surgery to remove intestinal obstruction

This year has been hell of a ride. I don't love thrillers, God now gotta lower the pace so I can revert back to my normal life. So to recap, dad's pelvic and sacral mets were found in March, 2022. We radiated it with 45Gy, early scan still showed growth in both places. And then dad started ha...

Re: Need guidance (lots of) with sacral mets and pelvic recurrence

Hello crybaby, When I get back I will be working on an annotated retrospective review of your dad's past 5 years, based on the timeline you gave above, but I will need some additional information that would most likely be found in these two documents: 1. Surgery report for the TME / LAR / iIeostomy...

Late effects of radiation to bowel loops?

This month has been quite bad for dad's bowels. He have been having trouble with gas getting trapped and some bowel blockage. Our local gastro tells us it might be because of some adhesions or strictures developed due to LAR or ileo reversal surgery. We had to visit ER 3 times to get some relief. Al...

Re: Can Injections to hip cause persisting pain?

This is indeed interesting - do you know what the injection was and how it was given? (Eg subcutaneous, intramuscular). I’d say hip pain with a sacral lesion and past radiation is always going to be suspicious unfortunately, but quite coincidental if it started immediately the following day. Yes, h...

Can Injections to hip cause persisting pain?

Earlier this month, we had a ER visit due to some trapped gas that won't pass. The nurse there gave my dad some injection to right side of right hip. Since the next day then, my dad kept complaining of some pain around that injection site.Though he can't really put a finger to exact location of pain...

Re: (Adhesions?) causing partial obstruction

Thanks, Thanks these posts are really helpful. We have already started minimal fiber diet for dad now, will take things slow from now on. And current gastro have replaced Lactulose based laxative with Milk of Magnesia and Liquid paraffin one. I will tell my dad about the exercises mentioned in posts...

(Adhesions?) causing partial obstruction

So my dad have been having those issue with some stools or gas obstruction a year or so after his ileo reversal in 2017. Though they used be once in couple months. In Dec 2021, was the first major complication and he had to be admitted for a little over a week. Then this year, we found pelvic and sa...

Just today dad again had one of those attacks. His motion was much better over this week but weekend kinda ruined it.
Will update more information with a new post.

When gas and stools won't pass for hours

So like 5-6 days ago, my dad started having that problem again when he was unable to pass gas or stools. The last that happened was probably during his radiation treatment in April. But this time was kinda bigger problem, his uneasiness this time was quite big. So had to go hospital at 2 am and afte...

Re: How did you treated those bone/spine mets

I commented on the scan timing on your other post so I won’t repeat myself. However I’ve not heard of using IMRT for bone mets - more commonly I think this would be SABR/SBRT (of which CyberKnife is one brand). Though perhaps given the need to also deliver pelvic radiation this was also a factor. I...

Re: Doc hated second opinions & some more questions about treatment

I always recommend second opinions. When I was diagnosed in 2004, a lot of doctors gave me no hope. You don't state where you live, but if you have Stage IV, I totally recommend you go to one of the very top hospitals. If you live in the US, these are MD Anderson, Mayo, Memorial Sloan Kettering. I ...

How did you treated those bone/spine mets

My dad completed 25 radiations (45 Gy) to sacral S1 mets + pelvic recurrence in May. The doc then asked for a PET scan just 1 month later (in June) and told us to redo the test the 3 months later since the disease was stable in last report. But now we also need to change the doc since our last doc k...
