Five inches of heavy, wet snow this morning. It was quite refreshing clearing off the cars, shoveling and clearing the roof. It was about 37 degrees, sunny, no wind. I'm going to try to run this afternoon as it is supposed to get into the low 50s. The ground will be wet with melting snow but all of my gyms are closed.

In Maryland we are not technically being told to shelter in place, but all nonessential businesses are now closed and we cannot gather in groups larger than 10. We have 349 cases in our state, mostly in the DC suburbs; 24 in my county and 41 in Baltimore City proper.

Mike, I have a friend who just recommended the beachbody site for home workouts. They have a 2-week free trial, so I may check that out. It sounds like they have a lot of variety available, despite the site not really selling it very well. I did some strength exercises with an exercise band this morning for the first time, and that was fine but will get boring fast, I think.

My 3-month bloodwork that would have been in April has already been moved back to May. Everything looked good the last time I was in, so I am not too worried about the delay. I'd rather stay away from the hospital right now.

Everyone's in wait and see mode. Maybe things are better in April or May. Hopefully this doesn't go on for too long.

Here's my state and New England:

MA is taking off - most of their cases are due to the Biogen conference I think. I hope that MA can get things under control soon.

I've been working from home for the past two weeks and I've noticed less clustering than before.

It's possible that it's due to less coffee as I haven't had any in two weeks. I normally get it at the office and I'm not comfortable with buying it at coffee stores right now.

Us cancer survivors are more used to some isolation. I find myself extolling the virtues of being a "germ-o-phob". When we are doing chemo we have to be extra careful.

After getting cold this past weekend it is back to warm and sunny today, here. I just walked .95 mile in in 17:52. Somehow I walked faster - perhaps since my muscles weren't so stiff.

I am about to post an update on my current state and "tele-medicine" remove visit with my Onc today.

May you all stay virus free and keep strong, so as to beat your cancer.

This makes sense to me Mike; since my ULAR caffeinated coffee has been completely out as I spend the rest of the day in the bathroom. I find I can get away with decaf coffee without being punished too greatly for it though.

Yeah, but going without coffee is rough for me. There's actually far less clustering without coffee. I don't think that I can normally go a long time without it though.

I ordered a Keiser M3i today. I've been thinking about it since last year I think. If I had ordered it back then, I would have had all of those miles in my basement to get through. I don't know how long the Stay-at-Home order will last but the combination of April Showers Bring May Flowers, gyms being closed, etc., has me wanting to be able to work out anytime I feel like it and a bike is the easiest way to go. I would really love a treadmill but a club-quality costs about $5K, they make a lot of noise and it would take up a lot of room. I got the Keiser M3i specifically because it's the quietest spinning bike out there so I can watch videos without having to use a headset.

I'm planning on dropping the Planet Fitness membership if this thing goes through May as I don't care to pay for a gym I'm not using. Yes, they are offering online workouts, but I'm a member, mostly because they have a network of bathrooms. And I like to workout there too.

I hope everyone is getting some exercise. I know that it's really hard if you're in the city.

I'd also like to get a Universal Bar instead of my regular bar but I've heard that everyone is buying barbells and dumbbells to workout at home with. My equipment works for me now so something to think about for the future.

Enjoy the new bike, Mike!

A bike seems to make a lot of sense for your application.

I am not coaching in the spring for the first time in over 30 years. Our family has been running/walking together and agave also done a lot of Peloton workouts. They have a 90 day app membership for free. I am impressed with the variety of workouts. It has become “family time” with my college student, middle schooler, wife, and I taking turns picking out workouts. Fun stuff!

I looked at the Peloton but I don't think that I need the workout classes as I tend to workout alone. If I do need them, then I think that I could subscribe to a service using my iPad (I understand that there are several of them out there). I have the clothes setup for running in bad weather but not a lot of clothes so I couldn't sustain running in a lot of rainy weather and I'm not inclined to do that. So I'm going to be cycling indoors more.

A friend of mine has a combined dips/pullups/roman chair machine and I'd love one of those but I'd have to redo my basement to get enough space for something that tall. I also looked at Dicks for an Olympic weight set. The price is quite reasonable for 300 pounds and it comes with 35 and 45 pound weight plates. The main challenge would be getting the thing home. I'm thinking of buying the bar, and then two plates at a time. Dicks offers curbside pickup these days. It's a 7 foot bar that weighs 45 pounds so the bar + 2x45 + 2x35 would get me to 205 pounds which is in my range for deadlifts.

One thing that I've noticed working from home is that I get in far fewer steps. My office is 1/4 mile from the kitchen so there are a lot of steps there during the day.

Short run in the snow this morning. I'm going to go back outside once I make gear adjustments. My windbreaker has a hood but it doesn't fit snugly - it blows off easily. I could wear a balaclava but it would get wet after a short period. I'm running in the snow because it's going to rain in a few hours and I hate running in the rain more than running in the snow. I know that you can run well in the rain or snow with the right gear. I'm mainly equipped, though, to run in hot or cold weather but not with precipitation.

One other factor about running in the rain and snow is that your outer layer has to fit really well.

I am considering driving to the office to run under the deck while it is raining. I'm trying to think of other places with a parking garage but nothing comes to mind. We live in a fairly flat area.

My step count has dropped below target (10,000 steps) being at home most of the time. My stairs targets have exceeded (15-30 flights) because I have to go up and down the stairs at home a lot.

On another note, one of my Brother-In-Laws has a problem with polyps in that he's getting a fair number with each colonoscopy. I've only ever had two and one was cancerous. He has other issues too, mainly related to his weight and the level of stress in his job (similar to mine). He had skin cancer treated in January. He is making lifestyle improvements but I think that a lot of people find dealing with excess weight to be difficult.

Finally got the spin bike assembled and took it for a spin for ten minutes. I think that it will take some time to get the muscles accustomed to cycling but it is really easy on the joints. One thing that I've noticed is that it's a lot harder to get the heartrate up. Running gets the heartrate up very quickly.

Cool with the new bike! Have you tried kettlebells? I have two of them at home and it is quite a flexible training. Here it is still snowing, but soon the rain will come as well.

Ah Claudia, I haven't heard mention of kettlebells in a while. When I first started at the gym yrs ago my trainer introduced me to them. I thought for the longest he was saying "cattlebells, lol." Mention of them makes me anxious to get back to the gym and my trainer :) Thank you!!!!

All the best

I don't have kettlebells but I have used them in the gym. I generally pick dumbbells and barbells over kettlebells but that's just habit. You can't get either of them right now. My guess is that things might improve in June but that's just speculation. I put 70% of my winter clothes in storage as it looks like things are going to be a little warmer (not below freezing) so I don't need the heavy stuff. I guess that you guys have it tougher if you're still getting snow this late. I took a trip to a local school track and it was great. It's really nice not having to worry about running - it's flat and you just run straight ahead. I was able to do some speed work too.
