Can chemo increase ALT & AST

Postby teresajj1 » Sun Dec 22, 2019 12:04 pm

Hey everybody. It's been awhile since I've posted. Im on 5FU (3rd round) and my AST and ALT numbers increased and I'm a bit worried. Although I am Stage 4, I've not yet had any cancer in my liver. It always comes back in my belly or pelvic area. This increase concerns me that something is wrong with my liver. Has anyone had an increase in these numbers while on chemo? I plan to ask my oncologist, but won't see him again until after Christmas.

Thanks, Teresa

Absolutely! I got to over 500 ALT and 300 AST, and they recovered fine without issues. My oncologist was happy to keep treating throughout. The chemo nurses said the “normal” ranges on the pathology reports don’t really apply to chemo patients... :)

Yes. My husbands ALT was high towards the end of his chemo, went back down a few months after completing treatments. Remember is really poison going into you system and after a while, your liver starts to talk to you.

Me: Here's some nice Folfox for you. Yum!

My liver:@#$%&*!!!

Me: I know, but the doctors say it's gooood for you. It'll make you well! Really! (fingers crossed behind back)

My liver: That [explictive deleted] stuff is [explictive deleted] hard on me! My AST is up. My ALT is up. My Alk Phos is up. Are you sure this isn't killing me?

Me: Uh... it's killing the tumors. And, well, maybe causing a few problems for you too, but you can handle it, right?

My liver: @#$%&*!!!

Me: Gotta run. Talk later.

Julie,

I always teased my husband when he was going thru folfox in saying that if this doesn't work, well just go home and have you drink some week killer. That might kill the tumor and hopefully not you!
