HAI PUMP REMOVED

Postby hart2hart » Tue Dec 24, 2019 2:58 pm

Pete just had his 5 year clear (hooray!) scan.
Dr Kemeny is talking about removing his Hai Pump and
Port. What’s involved in these procedures? A day visit?
Would love for all to let us know your experience. A message for all fighting this dreadful disease........
Keep fighting and know that Pete and I are so grateful we found the Colon Club as that’s how we found the
Wonderful Drs Kemeny and D’Angelica. We are forever
Thankful, Grateful and Blessed!

I'm due for my HAI pump removal too!!! :D :D :D

They said it's just outpatient surgery (no overnight stay in the hospital). I believe they said it would take about an hour. The incision will be glued, not stapled. They leave a piece of the catheter in place (the tip that's in your artery) because they've learned that is safer than trying to remove it.

That's all I know so far. They will remove my port at the same time. I expect some bruising but they said I'll only need Extra Strength Tylenol for any pain afterwards.

It will be weird to go through TSA without setting off alarms or getting patted down. I'm so used to it by now that I just tell them I need to go through the whole body scanner instead.

Let me know when they've decided Pete's surgery date and maybe we'll be there at the same time!!!

xo,
Juliej

Congratulations!!! I gotta be honest, I never wanna have mine removed. Its the Medtronic too so it has to be serviced more then the Codman and thats a huge inconvenience but this thing literally saved my life and it will be hard for me to part with it when its time.

I’m a 15+ year survivor so I no longer remember exactly when I had mine removed, but it was about a decade ago. It was non eventful AND I kept my pump. I have it displayed in a case for hockey pucks.

I was the second person to sign up for the trial I was on. I heard a lot of negative comments from people on this board about it. And they told me what their doctors thought. I also heard negative comments from doctors.

But now, here we are, with the pump showing a 67% success rate at the 10 year mark. I know it saved my life. So I kept it.

Mines a Medtronic Pump too.

And now, when I talk to doctors about it, they want to ask me a slew of questions.

I believe in the pump
