Side effects with chemo

Postby wife2jeff » Tue Nov 26, 2019 1:36 pm

I was curious to know if these are possible side effects to chemo. My husband seems to get a very bad stomach with cramping like 5-7 days after his chemo and then this last chemo he had 1/2 dose oxaliplatin added and he has a constant tickle dry cough in his chest. Could these be side effects to the chemo?

My husband has had severe abdominal cramps till the point he needed to be hospitalised due to chemo side effects — they’re likely due to capecitabine.

Perhaps you could update your signature so that we’re up to speed with his treatment plan?

Thank you , yes I will do that soon sorry I know that would probably be helpful. Oh wow that's awful. His hasn't gotten to that point yet but his stomach just starts to hurt with cramping for a good couple of days. Usually by now he's feeling pretty good but he's still feeling pretty awful from his last chemo and his next one is in a week.

The terrible bowel cramping/spasms I had with Capecitabine (Xeloda) were intolerable/constant and were the reason I stopped my Chemo after consultation with my Onc.
Note: I was Colon 2A and taking Chemo for my specific diagnosis/situation was optional. I only made it through 2 rounds-spasms started in the second round.

I sure hope your husband finds something to help him get through those terrible cramps.
Positive FIT test Spring 2013(intermittent blood=of course thought it was hemorrhoid) & finally got appt with colo-rectal surgeon Dec.2013 & then colonoscopy Aug. 2014
Sigmoid resection (laparoscopic) Nov. 2014 T3N0M0=colon 2A Female 53 yrs. old
Choice of to take Capecitabine(Xeloda) or not: did 2 rounds and then had to quit due to many side-effects(still have auto-immune/drug-induced arthritis problems)
Colonoscopy Fall 2015(few polyps), Jan 2017(couple polyps); all scans/CEA/monitoring good :D

He’s going for another cycle tomorrow. Really terrified to be honest, I do hope he is able to cope if not they’ll have to change chemo :(

Yes he has, and he’s totally fine. His oncologist is happy with his blood work, just slightly lowered red blood cells and elevated liver enzymes. We did that before the started capecitabine.

I'm sorry to hear your husbands having a hard time too. It's so hard to watch him go through it. My husbands seems more of just severe stomach aches, he's had cramps but it's more of just bad stomach ache. It's just that this has now been going on for 5 days now. It will be very bad for hours then it will be ok, then it will get bad again. He has another chemo on Tuesday but he isn't going to do the oxy anymore at least for now but even with the 5fu he was having at least a day of stomach upset but nothing like this. He is so worried about going again. I hope your husbands treatment goes better.

So far today his stomach has been ok but he still keeps having bouts of nausea, this is day 10 is this normal? will it just keep being like this now? He is so tired of feeling sick I'm so afraid he'll just stop if it keeps going on like this.

My boyfriend had his first oxy infusion three days ago and today he has stomach cramps and diarrhea. He never had anything like this on FOLFIRI. Maybe this is how it goes on oxy? I'm sorry to hear you are dealing with this.

Sorry to hear your boyfriend has to endure this too. Hopefully his stomach pains will not last too long. My husband hasn't had diarrhea with his nor constipation sometimes his stomach causes a bowel movement other times it just hurts super bad then eventually goes away
