He had an epidural catheter before surgery so that should keep him comfy for a bit

Getting pain under control BEFORE it sets in IS 100% the way to go !!!!!
With epidurals ( had a few ) they need to watch for urinary retention after they are finished.
Make sure you and hubby know to keep bugging the nurses about urine outputs after the epidural is out.
Sometimes it takes a while and they may need to catheterize him, to empty the bladder before it starts up on its own.
