Pump Placement

Postby hopefulandstrong » Wed Sep 18, 2019 11:07 am

Hello all -

So, I know this have been covered in other posts, but I'm having a hard time finding the details. I'm scheduled to go in on Monday for a follow-up at MSK. We're going in laparoscopically the make sure disease in, indeed, confined to liver, and if it is, they will place a pump. Can anyone tell me what the timeline for this looks like? If the lap looks good, do they right in? Is pump placement open ? How long to do you stay in hospital to recover from pump placement?

This is crazy, but we are trying to figure this out because my husband is having his knee replaced on Thursday!

Thanks!
Jackie (that's my actual name)

6/13/19 - CEA dropped from 214 to 22
8/29 - CEA jump to 30-- scans reveal liver spread, though still confined. triplet therapy abandoned; some concern about PIC3 mutation interfering with BRAF treatment
9/1 - 10/4 -- no treatment
10/4 -- folfoxfiri to stem further progression; pump placement in January (hopefully)

I don't have much info about timing, etc. However, in my case docs are talking about combining the pump install with my other 2 operations (liver resection and reversing ileostomy. Do you have other operations that should be combined with installing the pump?

Liver resection is a possibility. fortunately, my primary tumor was removed without an ostomy is January.

I think after my pump placement and colon resection I stayed 5 days - it would have been 4 but I struggled to have a BM.

I stayed 4 nights for my liver resection. I think I got out early, maybe too early.

So I would think 4-5 nights, with a chance of 3 if you push for it and if the pump is all they do.

Gina -

Did you go right in for the surgery? in my case, we're doing laparotomy first to check for extra hepatic disease. I can't imagine they place the pump laproscopically, right?

I did not do a check prior, just went in for surgery. We relied on the CT scan to rule that out. The pump cannot be placed laparoscopically, but that’s how they did my colon resection the same day.
