Question about wound under ostomy adhesive

Postby Rock_Robster » Sun Aug 11, 2019 4:35 am

Hi all,

I’ve asked this question on an ostomy forum too, but given there’s no doubt a number of ostomates here I thought I might cast a wider net for ideas!

I have a temporary ileostomy. My ULAR was done robotically and most of the small wounds have healed well. However there is one wound quite close to my stoma, so it is underneath the adhesive. Whenever I change the bag, removing it reopens the wound so it refuses to heal. If I put anything bigger than a steri-strip on it, I’m worried it will compromise the seal and I’ll have a leak.

So - does anyone have any advice for healing wounds underneath the adhesive? Ideally I’d love some way to protect it while it heals, without compromising the seal. I’m restarting chemo tomorrow and would prefer not to have a permanent hole in my abdomen :)

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,

Probably Captain Obvious, but I had to trim one side of my adhesive ring to avoid my navel. Is your incision close to the edge where you could do something like that?

Thanks Dave, good thought. I’ll have a look when I change in the morning but I think it’s further out - outside the adhesive ring I use (Coloplast Brava mouldable), but still underneath the adhesive from the bag connection (I think this is the wafer?).

Rock-Robster,

I recall Karen/Miss Molly recommending this product in the past. It's sounds like it's the gold standard for situations like yours.

Marathon liquid skin protectant

I have a lot of experience with wounds near my ostomy as I suffer from pyoderma gangrenosum. I have had the best luck bu compressing with dilute white vinegar and then applying a piece of a hydrofera blue ostomy ring over any open areas. I then apply a brava pad (cut to fit around my stoma and cover everything that might be open) and finally my actual barrier ring and wafer. I have tried many other methods but this has reliably and quickly healed every ulceration and hasn’t interfered with my pouch adhering at all. Good luck

I posted into another topic to enquire about Karen ... BUTT ... with no response so far

If you have any info, it would be much appreciated if you could share it ???

We understand if she does not wish to post herself,
BUTT ... it would be in keeping with the spirit of this forum
to at least let her know we are still thinking about her and keeping her in our hearts.

Thanks again everyone. I spent ages searching online for the Marathon liquid skin in this developing country we call Australia, finally found some for $80 and 2 weeks delivery. Then I realised the only ingredient is cyanoacrylate - aka super glue! But don’t worry, I didn’t use super glue. But I did find another cyanoacrylate at my local pharmacy for $9.99, so I’ve started using that today.

In the meantime by chance I ran into an ostomy nurse at my chemo treatment today, and she gave me some duoderm to cut and try under the wafer if the liquid skin doesn’t do the trick.

Cheers

After surgery, they had a wound product but I don't know the name of it It left something like a moderately thick transparent tape but the middle of it wasn't sticky. So it was like a big, transparent band-aid. That went over the wound and then the Ostomy stuff went over that.
