Colon Cancer Stage 3 May2019 new member

Postby Nate33 » Tue Jul 09, 2019 7:06 am

Hi,
This has been a whirlwind process for me. Having a colonoscopy in May and then colon resection the following week. Surgeon was unable to complete laparoscopically, so I had a 6 week recovery. I started chemo during week 4 of my recovery and have started my second treatment of FOLFOX yesterday. I have been reading many posts on here and thought I share my situation, which will hopefully be both informative and cathartic.
I was informed that the doctor would probably want to put me on Neulasta because my Gran# was 1.4. I wanted to have some questions regarding options, or if that is the norm then so be it.
I have had mild neuropathy in my finger tips, but a few days ago I went to turn to get something on a table behind me, and I felt the static shock feeling radiate up my right arm. Nothing was cold or hot, it was just the motion. I have my port on my right side, so the nurse thought it might be that. They noted it in my file.
Yesterday, I had my right hand freeze. Not the pins and needles/static shock neuropathy, but I couldn't move my thumb to close my hand and the other fingers were stiff but I could move them. Last night, it happened to my left hand briefly. Any thoughts?

Thank you. This has been a surreal experience. It all just feels like a bad dream..

I would have problems with twitching in my hands and feet and occasional difficulty using my hands during and a couple of days after folfox treatment, but then it would clear up. I also had the shooting electric feeling in my arms when I straightened them, once the neuropathy started to set in. I never had my hands freeze though. I would definitely talk to the oncologist about that.

I did not experience those symptoms but did experience arthritis-like feelings in my hands and I believe it was due the Xeloda. This was different from the Neuropathy which I experienced in my toes from the Oxaliplatin. I still have the feelings in my fingers but it is very mild; most of the time I don't notice it.

What you're describing sounds more like nerve signaling issues; similar to a rotator cuff impingement.

You may be seeing multiple symptoms.

If the symptoms go away, then it should be okay. What happened to me is that the symptoms took longer and longer to go away between chemo until they didn't go away. And so now they're permanent. I can live with them but it sounds like what you're going through is more unpleasant.

First...please read my signature so that you can see that's there is lots of hope. let your oncologist know about this symptoms because OXi effects the nerves in different ways. They explained it too me the they decide on the dose by your weight but metabolism can be different in each person. Good luck and get through this chemo

I remember a couple times during chemo that my hand would freeze in a gripping position and I would have to uncurl my fingers with the other hand. This didn’t happen super regularly but several times throughout chemo. I had no lasting effects though, except maybe a slight decrease in very fine motor skills. I love doing puzzles and I need to do good quality thick ones now. I can’t pick up really flimsy pieces.

Looks like you're a week ahead of me on chemo; I did my first cycle 7/8. It's amazing just how quickly life can take a left turn, eh? I hope your team gets the nerve stuff sorted out. Neuropathy was one of the things my chemo doc said could/would change the chemo dosages/given.

Hi Nate. 33

I experienced the frozen hand trick, I believe it was called ataxia. It’s from the oxali and is another symptom of neuropathy that you should mention to your doctor. I was able to complete 10 of my 12 sessions before the neuropathy became to severe nut I probably should have stopped one or two sooner as I’m still experiencing some inside effects 9 months later.

Good luck
