8 polyps found one was 3cm

Postby Bbgg » Mon Aug 27, 2018 6:19 pm

Hi
My 38 year old sister had a colonoscopy today. She had it done because for the past two months she has had red blood in her stool and cramping. They found 8 polyps (which they said is unusual for her age). The dr was particularly concerned about a 3cm polyp. They removed all of the polyps and are having them tested. My family is so nervous and we have to wait a week for results ! Any information regarding her situation etc would be helpful !!

Hi ,
I just want to welcome you to the forum . The waiting for results is hard on everyone . How is your sister coping ? Hopefully the biopsies will go in her favour . If not then caught early it’s a very treatable disease. I will leave others to go through that part as I am in a different health care system and there may be differences.

Take care,

I think you will just have to wait to see what the full colonoscopy report says -- including the biopsy of the large polyp. Please note that in one of the articles cited below it claims that Polyps larger than 2 cm have > 40% chance of being malignant.

There are quite a number of other things that need to be taken into account, for example possible mutations present in the polyp -- if the pathologist decides to send the biopsy specimen out for genomic or genetic testing they could also be testing for microsatellite Instability (MSI) or Lynch Syndrome (HNPCC), etc. The doctor should be able to explain all of this, if you ask. Also, over the next week you might want to look over some of the documents in the links below, since some of them discuss the kinds of details that are expected to be covered in a full colonoscopy report.

The chances of a polyp being cancerous depend mainly on the histology of the polyp, and you won't know anything about that until the pathology report comes out.

When you get the pathology report, you can look for terms like "tubular", "tubulovillous", and "villous", and these can give you some idea of the chances of the polyp ever becoming cancerous. You can also look at the size of the polyp. A 15mm polyp is the same as a 1.5 cm polyp, i.e., almost as large as a 2 cm polyp.

Here is some information on that:

...It is well known that colorectal cancers arise from adenomatous polyps, which have three histologic variants: tubular, tubulovillous, and villous adenomas. Tubular adenomas represent ~75% to 85% of adenomatous polyps and have < 5% chance of harboring a malignancy. Tubulovillous adenomas represent 10% to 15% of polyps and usually 20% to 25% harbor a malignancy. Villous adenomas constitute 5% to 10% of the remaining polyps and 35% to 40% of the polyps are malignant.
The size and degree of villous features are also predictive of the risk of malignancy within the polyp. Polyps larger than 2 cm have > 40% chance of being malignant...

I'm sorry to hear that your colonoscopy results are not in yet. Actually, it's more than just that. It's more like disappointment or even disillusionment. I don't see why on earth the system is so disorganized that that they cannot even stick to a schedule or predict when they might deliver a set of results. In my hospital, reports like this never take more than a day or two.

I hope they have a good excuse or at least that they apologize when they finally get around to producing a report.

I know .. I ageee.. it’s really unfair to tell a patient that they found something concerning “that doesn’t look good and “may or may not be cancer” and then expect them and their family to go on with their lives for the next ten days while waiting . It’s awfully unfair

Hi my sister got her results today.. no cancer ! Thank god !! Th all of her polyps were adenomas.. the large polyp was villois and the others were tubular.. said if she waited.. prob would have been cancer eventually. She needs another colonoscopy in six months - dr also wants me and three sisters to get colonoscopys to be sure . Thank you everyone for your concern and responses!!! Wish you all well!!!

Great news! Some health care systems now have a patient portal where you can go in and get your results as soon as they are available. Best wishes to your entire family. My siblings also got screened after my diagnosis.
