This morning, my DW, still in the hospital, awakened with a fever and high heart rate. Blood tests indicated an infection somewhere. CT and ultrasound found empyema, an infection in her pleural cavity. After talking with the doctors, they said it would be very difficult, painful, and time consuming to try to clear the infection, and it is just as likely that during that time another infection or clot would occur elsewhere, so the benefit does not outweigh the discomforts and risk. They recommend using IV antibiotics only, which will merely contain the infection for a time and help keep her comfortable. They describe this infection as pretty serious and could be fatal, and that she has "weeks" to live. But just a few days ago their estimate was 1-3 months. Seems like every time the doctors walk into the room the news gets worse. What can I do, but cry a river of tears?
