Pizza

Postby mcac15 » Fri Jun 15, 2018 4:31 pm

How long before a right hemicolectomy can your system tolerate pizza? Worried I'll never eat pizza again.

My husband had Right hemicolectomy last Tuesday. Surgeon said pizza was fine. Just don't eat highfiber foods, raw veggies or things like popcorn and nuts until he sees the surgeon on the 19th of June.

Yes, pizza was one of my hubby's go to foods when he was on strict low residue diet....I think everyone's different and it's good to reintroduce foods slowly to see how your body reacts...

A guy on another board had a Big Mac the day after surgery (his son snuck it in). The Doctor said he could eat anything.

It did not end well.

You could always try a very small piece of pizza, chew well and see how it goes.

Before my right hemi, I couldn't stand anchovies on my pizza.

Now I like them.

and here I thought there was NO cure for anchovies  !!!!

about a week after full resection I was back in the Big House for an abcess and was SO SICK ... of hospital food
I told the wife to score me a local burger favourite ( not Big Mac )
AND all was well !
and speaking of Big Macs ... while on my many chemo trips I would try to eat at McDonalds at least every 2-3 weeks
BUTT ..... just to keep my immunity up !

Take it slow, chew well, small portions and don't go for the extra hot Capicollo or Pepperoncini peppers the first time

Did you have a Right Hemi (ascending colon) or just cecum removed

My surgeon advised that I could anything I wanted after surgery. Terminal ileum, cecum, appendix and most of the ascending colon were removed. Surgery was on Monday morning, I was home Wednesday afternoon.
In reality I found that after surgery and more so now during chemo most foods are unappealing. Tomatoes are my equivalent to your pizza. Prior to surgery I could eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fortunately I still can!!
All the best for your quick recovery.

Interesting topic. I was 2 weeks out from my surgery, DD had a friend sleeping over (it's important to get life back to normal with younger kids), of course we order pizza. 2 slices later, thought I was going to die, double over in pain. NO more pizza for me. 2 weeks later, I would try 2 slices again, no problem. Gives your body a few weeks to recover from this surgery, low fiber diet for a few weeks, then gradually add other foods to your diet.

good luck,

I had a right hemi, which includes the ascending colon, cecum, and appendix. The cecum is part of the ascending colon.

If during your right colectomy, they removed all or a portion of your terminal ileum (end of your small intestine), your body may have lost most of its ability to absorb Vitamin B12. Lack of Vitamin B12 can lead to severe anemia, feeling "pooped", depressed and lots of other nasty things. From what I have read, 99% of your Vitamin B12 is absorbed in your terminal ileum. If yours is gone you may have a problem.

viewtopic.php?t=4374

From an archived thread.......

A source of B12 is shellfish so that's a Marinara pizza. :P

DH avoids the pepperoni toppings with casings (he also avoids hot dogs with casings, I found skinless ones). But he eats the crumbled sausage and mushroom pizza made at Wegman's and Papa John's, etc, just fine.
