Mom took last chemo med before mother's day....

Postby ocstacy » Tue May 15, 2018 12:10 am

Hi all,

Haven't been on in awhile. So my mom took her last chemo med on May 10, 2018. We celebrated on Mother's day and I took her to the beach with my in laws, husband and daughter. She looked so energetic and so happy. I can't believe a year has gone by since her DX, Neoadjuvant radiation, surgery, post op, post chemo, etc. Her last oncology appointment for awhile will be this Thursday. The next steps: She has a temp ileostomy, and she plans to get the reversal soon. Do you know when she will have her surgery? I wanted to reach out to those who had the reversal, what was your experience and prognosis? Dr. mentioned that her reversal should be very easy, maybe 1 or 2 hours? She had a rocky recovery with her first lap surgery. She had to go back to the hospital as she had an infection, but it cleared after antibiotics. Just trying to prepare and appreciate any feedback. Thank you

I was released the same day when I had my reversal. That is fairly unusual though. Recovery was easier (in some ways) than from the resection/ileostomy surgery. Many people have difficulty in getting back to a normal bowel function. I’m about a year out and doing well. The first couple of months were rough! But it improved quickly for me after that. It isn’t the same as it was but it is manageable. Hope your mom sails through easily!

Great to hear that she is not needing chemo and is doing well.. We are currently waiting on the dye test to check my wife's connection than we have been cleared for her reversal. She is way excited. I am cautiously excited and hoping that the potty training goes well after. I'm going to keep checking this thread I hope some will give tips on the reversal post surgery diet and what to expect.

Here is a brief summary of the reversal process. If you need more information, just let us know. There's a lot of information on the reversal process on this forum. The main keywords to use to find the posts on this forum are: REVERSAL, or TAKEDOWN.

Reversal of a Temporary Stoma
https://www.tsft.nhs.uk/media/44834/NEW-Reversal-of-temporary-stoma.pdf

There are basically three phases to this process, with three associated checklists:
  1. Pre-operative checklist - Things that have to be done before the reversal operation can take place.
  2. Peri-operative checklist - Things that should be done during or right after surgery (while still in the hospital)
  3. Post operative checklist - Issues that need to be addressed after the patient has been discharged to home
