I don't think that a surgeon would do a rectal resection ...any type....with the transanal approach BUT....I am not sure.
My surgery was an excision only.....only 1 or 2 nodes harvested that just happened to be next to the excised specimen.
I really have no idea about the approach you're talking about. I suppose it is possible but it is definitely not the same surgery
that I had.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks,
im not sure myself tbh, I must meet him.on the 20th, so wanted to have my questions ready, but can't find anyone who has had it done, I think its, because it shrunk so much makes it a,viable option, but I'm assuming ( only assuming!!!!!) Ill still need two separate proceedures for lymphs and temp colostomy all during the same surgery

I was diagnosed with stage 2A Rectal cancer 8 years ago. I had a complete response to Cheng/radiation. I did 4 months of chemo after surgery. I have a permanent colostomy. I have been cancer free for 8 years. I have an appointment in May, and hopefully I’m still NED. Good luck with everything!

My son was 2b with several risk factors (T4, LVI, PNI, obstruction, elevated CEA). He finished 6 months of FOLFOX a year ago and is still NED. Has another blood test and CT scan coming up this month. He had some difficulties with adhesions but surgery last December seems to have fixed that problem. Still has occasional abdominal pains that cause his anxiety to rise but overall is doing well.

I was diagnosed with a stage 2b or 2c colon cancer in August 2013, with poor prognostic factors (poorly differentiated, lots of invasion, T4 tumor). I opted for taking the chemo. 12 rounds of FOLFOX. Then I lived my life to the fullest - eloped, bought a condo, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. A few months after giving birth, my scan showed a tiny new mass near my duodenum. PET was clear, CEA normal and I even had laparoscopic surgery to biopsy the mass. The result was it was fibrotic tissue. My onc followed me closely and this mass started to grow VERY slowly. Then everything kind of went wild from there. About a year after discovering this mass, they operated on me to remove a suspicious ovarian cyst which turned out to be cancerous. A few days postop, I developed jaundice which turned out to be unrelated to the ovarian tumor, but rather it was the duodenum mass that was growing into my pancreas. Had an ERCP to insert a stent and had the mass biopsied from another angle.... looked very much like a met from the colon so I started chemo right away (Folfiri) and a few months later, a Whipple’s surgery to remove the mass and rewire my entire GI tract. At the moment, I have been declared NED (have had 2 scans since my Whipple’s). I am almost at the finish line of my chemos. Sorry for the super long text. I’m not saying this will happen to you but I would probably do the chemo just in case there are errand cancer cells... I’m actually doing well despite all this and I don’t regret choosing to do the chemo. Would want to put all the chances on my side.

Started Xeloda today. Lots of anxiety yesterday, but glad to be getting this done. I received my Oncogene DX text results back today. Test reported 12% recurrence risk with no chemo, but 7%-5% recurrence risk with 5fu/ Xeloda for 6 months. By adding Oxaliplatin it only improves risk by 1%. Any others use this tests? Surprised my insurance paid for it! I think it was helpful because it showed Xeloda works on my gene type and Oxaliplatin is not going to make a difference.

Hope the stage ll peeps are staying strong and positive :D

Teddybear,

It will go quicker than you think. Stay on top of hand/foot, drink plenty of water, take naps, and try to walk. Xeloda is doable and you will be ready to celebrate the holidays in no time! I wish I had the OncoDX, but my onc does not believe it is a reliable test for colon cancer. You have this!!!

Thanks Beckster. I appreciate the encouragement. My surgeon and first oncologist loved the test and the second oncologist I decided on doesn’t think it matters. Surprisingly the oncologist who likes the test didn’t change his recommendation for folfox and the second oncologist was in line with the report of no Oxaliplatin. Your stats are very similar to mine. I bet your results would be similar. I think it helps confirm the type of chemo.
