Colon resection now abcessed

Postby janrenea » Thu Feb 22, 2018 7:43 pm

I had a colon resection Feb 1st, had a hematoma 2days later.
Hemaglobian went from 12 to 7.3. Went home after 5 days
It is now the 22nd of Feb and I have had a fever for five days
But last night it was 104.4 so I called the doc and was told to come in. I had no other symptoms but fever. I went In and had bloodwork and another CT Scan. Was called this evening and
Told to be at the hospitals imaging department early tomorrow
Morning to have it drained. When the nurse called to tell me that she did not say I would
Be staying over but as I read many updates on this site about this leads me to believe it is a hospital stay. Any advice on what to expect?

BTDT so my situation may not mirror yours .... BUTT

I had a fever which would not come down and internal pelvic "aching" not really pain ... which would not stop
all starting about a week out from resection
SO
I was back in hosp for a while after a pelvic abscess, post resection
I did have it drained and flushed with the interventional radiology dept
after I was re-admitted and put on IV antibiotics

later went home with a drain which I flushed at home ( I am a vet with lotsa' medical experience  )
and was treated as out patient until the drain came out with a follow up scan to show it had resolved.

Depends on your exact situation, BUTT be prepared for some more time in hospital
... just sayin'

they should do a culture on what they drain and get you on some heavy duty antibiotics
... = JMO 'cos ... BTDT

Best wishes and let us know if we can be of more support for you

Cheers

Sorry to hear this. Had a somewhat similar experience with an abscess after liver resection. Treatment is to drain and give antibiotics. If it’s any consolation some people say the stimulation of one’s immune system caused by the infection can “theoretically” improve one’s odds of cure. Hope it goes well.

Have you had an internal or external hematoma?
Internal hematoma can liquefy and get infected. :(
Theoretically speaking such fever can be also caused by leak, however It seems to me that this is unlikely 3 weeks after a surgery.

Good luck and best wishes!
