Sending hope to the newly diagnosed

Postby CBLACK » Wed Nov 01, 2017 11:23 pm

I’m haven’t been on in ages which is a good thing because it means my husband is doing well! I thought coming on may help give some hope to the newly diagnosed. My husband was diagnosed in Aug 2006 at 26yrs old with Stage 3 colon cancer. He had an emergency resection and 6 months of chemo. We had just gotten married two years prior and it rocked our world. We chose to stay positive and surround ourselves with friends and family that kept us busy doing things we love so our lives were not just made up of his cancer diagnosis. It was still a nightmare experience filled with worry but we survived. One of the biggest worries aside from survival was having a family. We were told to bank sperm and then I was told by the bank we would need to do IVF whenever we chose to start a family because of a low count. I kept that info from my husband because I felt he didn’t need to know that while dealing with a new cancer diagnosis. So in 2008 we began to try to get pregnant and did so naturally within the first month! Talk about shocker. Boy I wanted to tell off that woman I spoke to at the sperm bank for giving me the burden of thinking my chances of having a family were slim.We then were blessed with another child in 2012. My husband just went for routine yearly blood work and continues to be cancer free. 11 years and counting. :D It’s possible so don’t give up, stay positive and some day it can be a distant memory. Keep the faith and use this forum as your added support and cheering section. You can do this! And if you are like me you will google search statistics and other internet facts but at the end of the day don’t make yourself a statistic. Everyone’s situation is different so don’t let that make you crazy or lose hope. Get sleep, eat, exercise, and still find ways to have fun when you can. -Colleen.

Thank you for sharing your up-lifting and positive experience with your husband. My mother has Stage 3 just had her LAP surgery two weeks ago but now back in the hospital for possible abscess. We are in Mexico on a family trip worried about her. Her recovery has been super rough! My father, aunt, and brother will be with her. Hoping to catch an early flight. Cancer sucks!! It is sad seeing stories of new diagnoses, but with each day that goes by we get closer to closing this awful chapter of life and moving on to new and happier chapters (congratulations on the babies). For some it's fighting for the next day, others months, scans, then years. There is hope, and stories like yours makes it more believable.
