Possible benefits of eating tree nuts

Postby horizon » Fri May 19, 2017 8:45 am

This topic popped up in my Google News feed yesterday. I've seen lots of articles about the benefits of diet and exercise for colon cancer survivors, but I've never seen tree nuts listed as potentially beneficial. A handful of almonds at night has been a habit of mine for as long as I can remember!

A little warning:
If you are prone to getting Calcium-oxalate kidney stones, eating a Lot of almonds may not be ideal. Almonds are very high in oxalate. (Reference http://kidneystones.uchicago.edu/how-to ... late-diet/ )

My hubby has had that kind of kidney stones so I am hoping that it is the high fiber + high Calcium in almonds (reference http://www.ehealthzine.com/top-10-foods ... ancer.html)
that makes almonds 'good' as noted in the webmd article that member horizon posted.

Can you eat nuts after a surgery?
58 yo male at diagnosis: T1bN0M0, 0/15 nodes, low grade/moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma
03/2016 colonoscopy: 2 small polyps removed in left colon; CEA = 1.3
04/2016 colonoscopy: caecum sessile 3.5 cm polyp piecemeal removed with kind of clear margins
05/2016 "prophylactic" laparoscopic right hemicolectomy - bleeding, leak, infection
06/2017 CT scan, colonoscopy OK; CEA = 1.6
A lot of funny stuff discovered by CT scans in liver, kidney, lungs, arteries, gallbladder, lymph node, pancreas

I am anaphylactic to tree nuts so unfortunately I can't eat them. Also I have had calcium oxalate kidney stones in the past. I wish I could eat them.

Nuts is included in the list from Cleveland Clinic of "Foods to Avoid for 4-6 Weeks" after bowel surgery.
Reference https://my.clevelandclinic.org/ccf/medi ... 6_AJK_.pdf

So if you are asking for yourself (and your Signature is up to date) it would be OK for you as I understand it. Please share if you have gotten other recommendations from your doctor. When we asked DH's Surgeon regarding what to eat (or not to eat) after surgery? He said: "No restrictions".

It's not just almonds that they suspect are beneficial. It's other tree nuts as well.

I feel your pain. I mentioned almonds because they are the only tree nut that I can eat.

My doctor told me after a surgery that I could eat anything I wanted.
However, in practice, this was not the case.
My bowel movements pattern was rather unpredictable in the first three months.
Then it normalised more or less.
I am gradually introducing new food, but have not tried nuts yet.

I suspect that the situation with tree nuts is not so simple after all. There is a long history of research on rotten, moldy nuts and their possible !ink to cancer.

Here is one of many articles on the issue of moldy nuts and aflatoxins

"You can reduce your aflatoxin exposure by buying only major commercial brands of nuts and nut butters and by discarding nuts that look moldy, discolored, or shriveled. To help minimize risk, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tests foods that may contain aflatoxins, such as peanuts and peanut butter. To date, no outbreak of human illness caused by aflatoxins has been reported in the United States, but such outbreaks have occurred in some developing countries."

I only buy brand name nuts. Eating a small handful a day lets me finish them way before there's any spoilage issues.
