3 days post reversal

Postby Youngjen81 » Mon Jan 30, 2017 11:14 pm

Had my ileostomy take down Friday. Today is Monday and I have not passed any gas. I have had a few episodes of 10/10 pain directly under my ribs, but most of my pain has been controlled with narcotics. Abdomen is distended and firm.
Last night I had a fever 101.6, Tylenol brought it down. This morning my surgeon ordered an xray, it shows gas outside the intestine under the liver, a section of dialated small intestine and some gas in the large intestine (which is good news).
Anyhow, if the fever comes back he's going to open me back up and re suture. In the mean time, small sips of clear beverages only.
I've read countless stories on here but have not found much on reversal complications. Have any of you heard of this happening?

I've been reading about reversals (hopefully doing mine in a few months) and unfortunately it does seem to have a lot of issues, esp for the first few weeks immediately after. I have been reading stories on the Inspire webiste about people with ostomies, they have a ton of posts on that very subject. https://www.inspire.com/groups/ostomy/?ref=as&asat=495777643

I have a question; Was your surgery simply for reversal, or did it also involve repair of a parastomal hernia?

I'm sorry you are having complications. I didn't have any with my reversal so I can't be of much help. Just hope that your fever didn't come back and you are now on your way with normal recovery from the reversal.
DX Dec 2015 at age 41
Stage 3 RC
Radiation and xeloda
May 2016 LAR and temp ileo
8 rounds chemo

I'm home. Never found out what caused the fever but most importantly I'm healing now. 7 days at the hospital after my reversal due to a gut that's slow to wake up.
The last 3 nights I've been up over 20 times going to the toilet. BM's are watery. Just glad to home and healing.

I was a few days out from my surgery to remove my tumor when I too developed a some what high fever. I believe they took an x-ray of me and found nothing wrong. I remember the nurse telling me they had to take the fever seriously, butt they suspected my fever was a direct result of my bowels waking up. Sure enough, a few hours later, fever is gone and they could hear gas in my bowels. 24 hrs later, I was passing gas into my bag.

Glad you are home,

My experience was that the anastomosis was blocked by having solid food at about 3 days. I had abdominal distension as a result, and looked pregnant (no exaggeration.) It took two weeks to resolve. If you've not had solid food, you could have leaking at the anastomosis that's letting gas into the abdomen. But if the doctors are watching, you'll be taken care of. If the anastomosis heals, the leakage will stop. That's what the doc is likely hoping for right now. In my case the sutures were tight and there was no leakage. Instead, the bowel itself swelled up causing the distension. If you trust your surgeon and the anastomosis needs to be redone, go ahead with it. If you don't trust the surgeon, get someone else with as much experience as possible to do the work.
