Postby Steph20021 » Fri Jul 29, 2016 10:01 am

Im having folfori treatment on friday the 13th with deaccess scheduled on the sunday but would it be a problem keeping the bottle on and empty until Tuesday? I want to be out of town at a family members cottage and just want to deaccess when I get home. I will sdk my team but do you guys see any problem with that? I have a port.

Steph,

Not sure about whether deaccess would be appropriate for day 5 but did want to mention that my husband always removed my port needle after the 5FU was finished. Basically he would clean the area, run alcohol and heparin through the line and then simply remove the needle from the port. Took him 4-5 minutes to do so. Perhaps this could be an option for you? It was very simple and apparently something many of my doctor's patients did as they had pre-packaged deaccess bags (with alcohol wipes, alcohol and heparin syringes).

Steph, not a medical opinion, butt i would think the longer the port is accessed, the greater the chance for infection. Not something i would take a chance on. I generally deaccess myself at home, takes just minutes, and center gives me the supplies to do so.

Thanks ladies. Maybe I'll try and move it up a day and deaccess Saturday and leave for cottage after the Saturday access.

I had my first infusion today I'm home with bottle feeling so nauseas. I forgot how icky it feels. And I'm feeling scared and overwhelmed. It's going to be ok though right? Everything is going to be ok I keep telling myself.

It is safe to be accessed for 7 days. When one is in the hospital and connected, they just change the needle every seven days.

Yes, its going to be ok. Someone once told me that - doesnt matter the outcome, its ok, cause its how things are supposed to turn out.

Thanks Bev, I remember the nurse saying its a closed system nothing can get in. It seems to be safer to avoid issues than having a pic.
Midlifemom, I like that saying. I should post that on the mirror.
