Vectibix toe nail misery

Postby ronnieciao » Sun Jan 03, 2016 6:17 am

Hello all,

My Mum has this ongoing problem with her toes. she has been on panatumumab (vectibix) for over a year with a break in between.

The problem is that her toe nail is constently infected and incredibly painful. she bathes her feet in antiseptic twice a day, applies steroid cream on the area twice a day too...but nothing seems to be helping really. it's getting so bad that is limiting her ability to walk which is terrible as she feels good otherwise.

Her doctors don't know what to do about it.

has anyone on vectibix found any solutions for this issue?

thank you so much all!

Veronica - My husband also had infection in his toe-nails. The topical ointments and soaks didn't help, and we did our best to cushion his big toes so he could wear shoes. After several weeks, we made an appointment to see the podiatrist, who cut away the nail, exposed the infection and ordered twice a day soaks in warm water and a small amount of beta dine. Infection cleared up, and he had no more problems. But, the best news was that removing part of the toe nail (which sounds horrible, but was an easy procedure) gave DH almost immediate relief. Best wishes to you and your mom.

Has she tried antibiotics? They seem to help me. Another thing that seems to help is slathering Bag Balm on my feet and then putting them in socks.

Hi Pattie,
Unfortunately Mum already had the nail cut in the hospital about 6 months ago...and she nearly screamed The hospital down she was in that much pain. She actually said that with everything she had been through that was the worse of it all and she would never, ever have it done again, so I don't even try suggesting it.... :(

She also cushions her feet at all times and can only wear FitFlop brand shoes, something about the width and the shape of them protects her foot a little. Don't know exactly why. Still, it's a big problem that is limiting her greatly...also, I mention the big toe only as it's the biggert issue, but really all of her toes on her feet have tender and painful skin around the nails. She bumped into someone a few weeks ago feet first on the street and she practically fainted from the pain.

Brown Bagger, what is Bag Balm? Will have to find the equivalent over here and give it a try....

Thank you both for your suggestions!!

Dairy farmers use it to sooth their hands after milking.

You might find something in your part of the world with similar ingredients. It's basically Vaseline with some extra goodies.

Good luck!

There's a document on the Michael's Mission website that covers nail problems and treatments for Vectibix.

The section on "Nail Changes" is on pp 10-12.

There is also an on-line interactive tool called Skin Care Counselor that gives a personalized report on skin, hair and nails that you can discuss with your doctor.
