Terrible day but we made it

Postby cmewrrie » Thu Aug 13, 2015 9:14 am

Surgeon went into labor right before my husbands case. Her back up was not a colorectal surgeon so they canceled. A friend got in touch with the head oncology surgeon and it was a miracle that he took our case and they literally chased us down as we were leaving. 4 hour surgery took 8 and sadly the LAR became an APR. butt cancer is gone and DH is in good spirits today.

I'm wiped out but glad to see him after such a tough day.
wife of DH (04/24/15 dx: age 43) Low RC T3N0M0 stage 2
4/27/15 clear CT
5/18 - 6/25 chemo/rad (ended xeloda on 6/19 due to side effects)
8/12/15 - ULAR scheduled - APR performed due to location - path showed T1N0M0
9/25 begin 5 rounds of xelox
10/30/15 - switch to xeloda only due to allergic reaction
1/22/16- last xeloda!
3/27/16 - post treatment CT - clear except soft tissue presacral area (possibly scar tissue) CEA .5
4/20/16 - post treatment colonoscopy

Sorry to hear you and your DH had such lousy luck. :( I hope that he is feeling comfortable and you are now getting some sleep.
All the best for the recovery and adjustment period.

Thank you. We are fortunate to have benefited in the hands of one of the top oncology surgeons in our state so while the permanent ostomy is something that will take getting used to, I'm confident he did what was necessary for curative results. Can't complain about that. :)

Learning to deal with an ostomy isn't a walk in the park, particularly if you aren't expecting it. But it is one heck of a lot better than the alternative.

All the best to both of you.

So sorry things didn't go according to plan with the surgeon and the lar/apr. That would be very stressful. Hope he is recovering comfortably and glad they think they got everything! As you say that is the most important thing.
