APR surgery

Postby Deborah614 » Sun May 31, 2015 10:30 pm

I posted a cry for help several weeks ago about making the decision whether to have apr surgery or take a watch and wait approach. The advice given was to have the surgery and so I had it done last Thursday 05/28. <Ouch> I'm glad you talked me into it and you were right, I'm sitting and walking already and might be released from the hospital tomorrow. All my vitals are normal and my pain is tolerable now, but my stoma hasn't done its thing yet except release bowel sweat. How long before it works? Will they keep me here until it does? Any suggestions on care or concerns from the true experts that are on here? I'll totally trust your advice, so thank you.

That's the way it went for me, wouldn't release me till things started moving through. It took a while, but it did happen. Good luck!

Yeah, I doubt they'll let you out until you've passed more than stoma sweat. They really shouldn't IMO. Mine started working around 4 days post-op.

I'm glad you're feeling well. Keep walking but also take it easy when you get home. Recovery can have its up and downs. Don't be too hard on yourself if you have a bad day.

Take care!

Thank you for responding. I am not having a good day today. My bladder won't work. They put the catheter back in and called in a urologist, and I'm betting on radiation damage. It's been giving me problems since mid March. The stoma is blowing gas bubbles for me. It's kind of sweet. What an adventure. <sigh>
