Trying to sleep but leaking keeps him up

Postby COHgirl » Wed Mar 20, 2013 10:18 pm

My boyfriend is miserable with this constant leaking he is dealing with. It's either poop or mucus and it happens all the time. I can't say that I've seen him go longer than an hour and a half without something leaking out of him. He never gets any good sleep. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get thru the night with this stuff coming out all the time? We've used the anti diarrhea medicines but he is afraid of getting constipated. Since anything moving thru his colon causes pain the last thing he needs is to pass hard stools. I've got the big green underpads on the couch and towels. He wears Depends. I told him to not worry and just sleep thru the leaks if he can but he hates the idea of waking up all messy.

Any suggestions on how to sleep thru the night when you leak almost every hour?

Watch the food eating in evening. Look into getting ambien script to help get him into a deeper sleep. Lay on right side.
hope this helps.

Lizzy, sorry I couldn't elaborate more on my first post. I was posting from a kindle and I'm no good with that keypad!

Anyhow, could we get a little more info on your boyfriends status? Did he have an ostomy and go through reversal and now he is leaking? Or, did he have resection with no ostomy and maybe had some sphinter muscles damaged (although if surgeon got close enough to sphincter he probably would have had a temp iliostomy)?

We could probably help more with a little more info. Has he tried kegel exercises?

If this is a longterm problem he may want to consider a permanent colostomy.

Rob - in another thread she has posted that he just finished chemo/rad. The tumor has shrunk and they are hoping to schedule surgery soon. A colostomy will take care of this issue after surgery.

Yes, that's correct. I was just wondering if there was anything that would make him more comfortable until surgery. Tomorrow we are supposed to schedule the surgery. I thought we would know today. Always waiting....

A bright spot for today, he had three ACTUAL bowel movements sitting on the toilet. I wonder if this is his colon waking up after being off the OxyContin, oxycodone, and morphine for a couple of weeks. He was on them for a little over six weeks.

Thanks for filling me in. Hope his colon is getting its "second wind"!
